Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 21[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
21 O Lord, the king rejoices in the strength you give;[b]
he takes great delight in the deliverance you provide.[c]
2 You grant[d] him his heart’s desire;
you do not refuse his request.[e] (Selah)
3 For you bring him[f] rich[g] blessings;[h]
you place a golden crown on his head.
4 He asked you to sustain his life,[i]
and you have granted him long life and an enduring dynasty.[j]
5 Your deliverance brings him great honor;[k]
you give him majestic splendor.[l]
6 For you grant him lasting blessings;
you give him great joy by allowing him into your presence.[m]
7 For the king trusts[n] in the Lord,
and because of the Most High’s[o] faithfulness he is not shaken.[p]
8 You[q] prevail over[r] all your enemies;
your power is too great for those who hate you.[s]
9 You burn them up like a fiery furnace[t] when you appear.[u]
The Lord angrily devours them;[v]
the fire consumes them.
10 You destroy their offspring[w] from the earth,
their descendants[x] from among the human race.[y]
11 Yes,[z] they intend to do you harm;[aa]
they dream up a scheme,[ab] but they do not succeed.[ac]
12 For you make them retreat[ad]
when you aim your arrows at them.[ae]
13 Rise up, O Lord, in strength![af]
We will sing and praise[ag] your power.
The Lord Will Judge the Earth
24 Look, the Lord is ready to devastate the earth
and leave it in ruins;
he will mar its surface
and scatter its inhabitants.
2 Everyone will suffer—the priest as well as the people,[a]
the master as well as the servant,[b]
the elegant lady as well as the female attendant,[c]
the seller as well as the buyer,[d]
the borrower as well as the lender,[e]
the creditor as well as the debtor.[f]
3 The earth will be completely devastated
and thoroughly ransacked.
For the Lord has decreed this judgment.[g]
4 The earth[h] dries up[i] and withers,
the world shrivels up and withers;
the prominent people of the earth[j] fade away.
5 The earth is defiled by[k] its inhabitants,[l]
for they have violated laws,
disregarded the regulation,[m]
and broken the permanent treaty.[n]
6 So a treaty curse[o] devours the earth;
its inhabitants pay for their guilt.[p]
This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear,[q]
and are reduced to just a handful of people.[r]
7 The new wine dries up,
the vines shrivel up,
all those who like to celebrate[s] groan.
8 The happy sound[t] of the tambourines stops,
the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt,
the happy sound of the harp ceases.
9 They no longer sing and drink wine;[u]
the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.
10 The ruined town[v] is shattered;
all the houses are shut up tight.[w]
11 They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine;[x]
all joy turns to sorrow;[y]
celebrations disappear from the earth.[z]
12 The city is left in ruins;[aa]
the gate is reduced to rubble.[ab]
13 This is what will happen throughout[ac] the earth,
among the nations.
It will be like when they beat an olive tree,
and just a few olives are left at the end of the harvest.[ad]
14 They[ae] lift their voices and shout joyfully;
they praise[af] the majesty of the Lord in the west.
15 So in the east[ag] extol the Lord,
along the seacoasts extol[ah] the fame[ai] of the Lord God of Israel.
16 From the ends of the earth we[aj] hear songs—
the Just One is majestic.[ak]
But I[al] say, “I’m wasting away! I’m wasting away! I’m doomed!
Deceivers deceive, deceivers thoroughly deceive!”[am]
A Life Pleasing to God
4 Finally then, brothers and sisters,[a] we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received instruction from us about how[b] you must live and please God (as you are in fact living)[c] that you do so more and more. 2 For you know what commands we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3 For this is God’s will: that you become holy,[d] that you keep away from sexual immorality, 4 that each of you know how to possess his own body[e] in holiness and honor, 5 not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God. 6 In this matter no one should violate the rights of his brother or take advantage of him,[f] because the Lord is the avenger in all these cases,[g] as we also told you earlier and warned you solemnly. 7 For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness. 8 Consequently the one who rejects this is not rejecting human authority[h] but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
9 Now on the topic of brotherly love[i] you have no need for anyone to write you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another. 10 And indeed you are practicing it toward all the brothers and sisters[j] in all of Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,[k] 11 to aspire to lead a quiet life, to attend to your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you. 12 In this way you will live[l] a decent life before outsiders and not be in need.[m]
