Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 62[a]
For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David.
62 For God alone I patiently wait;[b]
he is the one who delivers me.[c]
2 He alone is my protector[d] and deliverer.
He is my refuge;[e] I will not be upended.[f]
3 How long will you threaten[g] a man like me?
All of you are murderers,[h]
as dangerous as a leaning wall or an unstable fence.[i]
4 They[j] spend all their time planning how to bring their victim[k] down.[l]
They love to use deceit;[m]
they pronounce blessings with their mouths,
but inwardly they utter curses.[n] (Selah)
5 Patiently wait for God alone, my soul![o]
For he is the one who gives me hope.[p]
6 He alone is my protector[q] and deliverer.
He is my refuge;[r] I will not be shaken.
7 God delivers me and exalts me;
God is my strong protector and my shelter.[s]
8 Trust in him at all times, you people!
Pour out your hearts before him.[t]
God is our shelter. (Selah)
9 Men are nothing but a mere breath;
human beings are unreliable.[u]
When they are weighed in the scales,
all of them together are lighter than air.[v]
10 Do not trust in what you can gain by oppression.[w]
Do not put false confidence in what you can gain by robbery.[x]
If wealth increases, do not become attached to it.[y]
11 God has declared one principle;
two principles I have heard:[z]
God is strong,[aa]
12 and you, O Lord, demonstrate loyal love.[ab]
For you repay men for what they do.[ac]
8 The Sovereign Lord confirms this oath by his very own life.[a]
The Lord God of Heaven’s Armies is speaking:
“I despise Jacob’s arrogance;
I hate their[b] fortresses.
I will hand over to their enemies[c] the city of Samaria[d] and everything in it.”
9 If ten men are left in one house, they too will die. 10 When their close relatives, the ones who will burn the corpses,[e] pick up their bodies to remove the bones from the house, they will say to anyone who is in the inner rooms of the house, “Is anyone else with you?” He will respond, “No one.” Then he will say, “Hush! Don’t invoke the Lord’s name!”[f]
11 Indeed, look! The Lord is giving the command.[g]
He will smash the large house to bits
and the small house into little pieces.
12 Can horses run on rocky cliffs?
Can one plow the sea with oxen?[h]
Yet you have turned justice into a poisonous plant,
and the fruit of righteous actions into a bitter plant.[i]
13 You are happy because you conquered Lo Debar.[j]
You say, “Did we not conquer Karnaim[k] by our own power?”
14 “Look! I am about to bring[l] a nation against you, family[m] of Israel,”
the Lord, the God who commands armies, is speaking.
“They will oppress[n] you all the way from Lebo Hamath[o] to the stream of the rift valley.”[p]
To the Church in Laodicea
14 “To[a] the angel of the church in Laodicea write the following:[b]
“This is the solemn pronouncement of[c] the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the originator[d] of God’s creation: 15 ‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.[e] I wish you were either cold or hot! 16 So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going[f] to vomit[g] you out of my mouth! 17 Because you say, “I am rich and have acquired great wealth,[h] and need nothing,” but[i] do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful,[j] poor, blind, and naked, 18 take my advice[k] and buy gold from me refined by fire so you can become rich! Buy from me[l] white clothing so you can be clothed and your shameful nakedness[m] will not be exposed, and buy eye salve[n] to put on your eyes so you can see! 19 All those[o] I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent! 20 Listen![p] I am standing at the door and knocking! If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come into his home[q] and share a meal with him, and he with me. 21 I will grant the one[r] who conquers[s] permission[t] to sit with me on my throne, just as I too conquered[u] and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”
