Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 140[a]
For the music director, a psalm of David.
140 O Lord, rescue me from wicked men.[b]
Protect me from violent men,[c]
2 who plan ways to harm me.[d]
All day long they stir up conflict.[e]
3 Their tongues wound like a serpent;[f]
a viper’s[g] venom is behind[h] their lips. (Selah)
4 O Lord, shelter me from the power[i] of the wicked.
Protect me from violent men,
who plan to knock me over.[j]
5 Proud men hide a snare for me;
evil men[k] spread a net by the path.
They set traps for me. (Selah)
6 I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”
O Lord, pay attention to my plea for mercy.
7 O Sovereign Lord, my strong deliverer,[l]
you shield[m] my head in the day of battle.
8 O Lord, do not let the wicked have their way.[n]
Do not allow their[o] plan to succeed when they attack.[p] (Selah)
9 As for the heads of those who surround me—
may the harm done by[q] their lips overwhelm them.
10 May he rain down[r] fiery coals upon them.
May he throw them into the fire.
From bottomless pits they will not escape.[s]
11 A slanderer[t] will not endure on[u] the earth;
calamity will hunt down a violent man and strike him down.[v]
12 I know[w] that the Lord defends the cause of the oppressed
and vindicates the poor.[x]
13 Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name;
the morally upright will live in your presence.
15 I will give you leaders[a] who will be faithful to me.[b] They will lead you with knowledge and insight. 16 In those days, your population will greatly increase[c] in the land. At that time,” says the Lord, “people will no longer talk about having the ark[d] that contains the Lord’s covenant with us.[e] They will not call it to mind, remember it, or miss it. No, that will not be done anymore![f] 17 At that time the city of Jerusalem will be called the Lord’s throne. All nations will gather there in Jerusalem to honor the Lord’s name.[g] They will no longer follow the stubborn inclinations of their own evil hearts.[h] 18 At that time[i] the nation of Judah and the nation of Israel will be reunited.[j] Together they will come back from a land in the north to the land that I gave to your ancestors as a permanent possession.
Live in the Light
6 Let nobody deceive you with empty words, for because of these things God’s wrath comes on the sons of disobedience.[a] 7 Therefore do not be sharers with them,[b] 8 for you were at one time darkness, but now you are[c] light in the Lord. Live[d] like children of light— 9 for the fruit of the light[e] consists in[f] all goodness, righteousness, and truth— 10 trying to learn[g] what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather[h] expose them.[i] 12 For the things they do[j] in secret are shameful even to mention. 13 But all things being exposed by the light are made visible. 14 For everything made visible is light, and for this reason it says:[k]
Live Wisely
15 Therefore consider carefully how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 taking advantage of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 For this reason do not be foolish, but be wise[o] by understanding[p] what the Lord’s will is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, which[q] is debauchery,[r] but be filled by the Spirit,[s] 19 speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music[t] in[u] your hearts to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for all things[v] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
