Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Appeal of Wisdom[a]
8 Does not wisdom call out?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
2 At the top[b] of the prominent places along the way,
at the intersection[c] of the paths she has taken her stand;
3 beside the gates opening into[d] the city,
at the entrance of the doorways she cries out:[e]
4 “To you, O people,[f] I call out,
and my voice calls[g] to all mankind.[h]
22 The Lord created[a] me as the beginning[b] of his works,[c]
before his deeds of long ago.
23 From eternity I have been fashioned,[d]
from the beginning, from before the world existed.[e]
24 When there were no deep oceans[f] I was born,[g]
when there were no springs overflowing[h] with water;
25 before the mountains were set in place—
before the hills—I was born,[i]
26 before he made the earth and its fields,[j]
or the top soil[k] of the world.
27 When he established the heavens, I was there;
when he marked out the horizon[l] over the face of the deep,
28 when he established the clouds above,
when he secured the fountains of the deep,[m]
29 when he gave the sea his decree[n]
that the waters should not pass over his command,[o]
when he marked out the foundations of the earth,
30 then I was[p] beside him as a master craftsman,[q]
and I was his delight[r] day by day,
rejoicing before him at all times,
31 rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth,[s]
and delighting[t] in its people.[u]
Psalm 8[a]
For the music director, according to the gittith style;[b] a psalm of David.
8 O Lord, our Lord,[c]
how magnificent[d] is your reputation[e] throughout the earth!
You reveal your majesty in the heavens above.[f]
2 From the mouths of children and nursing babies
you have ordained praise on account of your adversaries,[g]
so that you might put an end to the vindictive enemy.[h]
3 When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made,
and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place,[i]
4 Of what importance is the human race,[j] that you should notice[k] them?
Of what importance is mankind,[l] that you should pay attention to them?[m]
5 You made them[n] a little less than[o] the heavenly beings.[p]
You crowned mankind[q] with honor and majesty.[r]
6 you appoint them to rule over your creation;[s]
you have placed[t] everything under their authority,[u]
7 including all the sheep and cattle,
as well as the wild animals,[v]
8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that moves through the currents[w] of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord,[x]
how magnificent[y] is your reputation[z] throughout the earth![aa]
The Expectation of Justification
5 [a] Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have[b] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have also obtained access[c] into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice[d] in the hope of God’s glory. 3 Not[e] only this, but we also rejoice in sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance, character, and character, hope. 5 And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God[f] has been poured out[g] in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
12 “I have many more things to say to you,[a] but you cannot bear[b] them now. 13 But when he,[c] the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide[d] you into all truth.[e] For he will not speak on his own authority,[f] but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you[g] what is to come.[h] 14 He[i] will glorify me,[j] because he will receive[k] from me what is mine[l] and will tell it to you.[m] 15 Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said the Spirit[n] will receive from me what is mine[o] and will tell it to you.[p]
