Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
13 Behold, my [a]servant shall prosper: he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.
14 As many were astonied at thee (his visage was so [b]deformed of men, and his form of the sons of men) so [c]shall he sprinkle many nations: the Kings shall shut their [d]mouths at him: for that which had not been told them, shall they see, and that which they had not heard shall they [e]understand.
53 1 Of Christ and his kingdom, whose word few will believe. 6 All men are sinners. 11 Christ is our righteousness, 12 and is dead for our sins.
1 Who [f]will believe our report? and to whom is the [g]arm of the Lord revealed?
2 But he shall grow up before him as a branch, and as a [h]root out of a dry [i]ground; he hath neither form nor beauty: when we shall see him, there shall be no form that we should desire him.
3 He is despised and rejected of men: he is a man full of sorrows, and hath experience of [j]infirmities: we hid as it were our faces from him: he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely, he hath born our infirmities, and carried [k]our sorrows, yet we did judge him as [l]plagued and smitten of God, and humbled.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions: he was broken for our iniquities: the [m]chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes are we healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray: we have turned every one to his own way, and the Lord hath laid upon him the [n]iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet did he not [o]open his mouth: he is brought as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.
8 He was taken out from [p]prison, and from judgment: [q]and who shall declare his age? for he was cut out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he plagued.
9 [r]And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no wickedness, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet the Lord would break him and make him subject to infirmities: when [s]he shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed and shall prolong his days, and the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 He shall see of the [t]travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied; by his knowledge shall my [u]righteous servant justify many: for he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I give him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because [v]he hath poured out his soul unto death; and he was counted with the transgressors, and he bare the sin [w]of many, and prayed for the trespassers.
22 1 David complained because he was brought into such extremities that he was past all hope, but after he had rehearsed the sorrows and griefs, wherewith he was vexed. 10 He recovereth himself from the bottomless pit of tentations, and groweth in hope. And here under his own person he setteth forth the figure of Christ, whom he did foresee by the spirit of prophecy, that he should marvelously, and strangely be rejected, and abased, before his Father should raise and exalt him again.
To him that excelleth upon [a]Aijeleth Hashahar. A Psalm of David.
1 My [b]God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me, and art so far from mine health, and from the words of my [c]roaring?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but thou hearest not: and by night, but [d]have no audience.
3 But thou art holy, and dost inhabit the [e]praises of Israel.
4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
5 They called upon thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
6 But I am a [f]worm, and not a man: a shame of men, and the contempt of the people.
7 All they that see me, have me in derision: they make a mow and nod the head, saying,
8 [g](A)He trusted in the Lord, let him deliver him: let him save him, seeing he loveth him.
9 But thou didst draw me out of the [h]womb: thou gavest me hope, even at my mother’s breasts.
10 I was cast upon thee, even from the [i]womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.
11 Be not far from me, because trouble is near: for there is none to help me.
12 Many young bulls have compassed me: mighty [j]bulls of Bashan have closed me about.
13 They gape upon me with their mouths, as a ramping and roaring lion.
14 I am like [k]water poured out, and all my bones are out of joint: mine heart is like wax: it is molten in the midst of my bowels.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws, and thou [l]hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me, and the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they [m]pierced mine hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones, yet they behold, and look upon me.
18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
19 But be not thou far off, O Lord, my strength: hasten to help me.
20 Deliver my soul from the sword: my [n]desolate soul from the power of the dog.
21 [o]Save me from the lion’s mouth, and answer me in saving me from the horns of the unicorns.
22 (B)I will declare thy Name unto my brethren: in the midst of the Congregation will I praise thee, saying,
23 [p]Praise the Lord, ye that fear him: magnify ye him, all the seed of Jacob, and fear ye him all the seed of Israel.
24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the [q]poor: neither hath he hid his face from him, but when he called unto him, he heard.
25 My praise shall be of thee in the great Congregation: my [r]vows will I perform before them that fear him.
26 [s]The poor shall eat and be satisfied: they that seek after the Lord, shall praise him: your heart shall live forever.
27 All the ends of the world shall remember themselves and turn to the Lord, and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
28 For the kingdom is the Lord’s, and he ruleth among the nations.
29 All they that be fat [t]in the earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down into the dust, shall bow before him, [u]even he that cannot quicken his own soul.
30 [v]Their seed shall serve him: it shall be counted unto the Lord for a generation.
31 They shall come and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, because he hath [w]done it.
16 (A)This is the Testament that I will make unto them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my Laws in their heart, and in their minds I will write them.
17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember [a]no more.
18 Now where remission of these things is, there is no more offering for [b]sin.
19 [c]Seeing therefore, brethren, that by the blood of Jesus we may be bold to enter into the Holy place,
20 By the new and living way, which he hath prepared for us, through the veil, that is, his [d]flesh:
21 And seeing we have an high Priest, which is over the house of God,
22 [e]Let us draw near with a [f]true heart in assurance of faith, our [g]hearts being pure from an evil conscience,
23 And washed in our bodies with [h]pure water, let us keep the profession of our hope, without wavering, (for he is faithful that promised.)
24 And let us consider one another, to provoke unto love, and to good works,
25 Not forsaking the fellowship that we have among ourselves, as the manner of some is: but let us exhort one another, [i]and that so much the more, because ye see that the day draweth near.
14 [a]Seeing then that we have a great high Priest, which is entered into heaven, even Jesus the Son of God, let us [b]hold fast our profession.
15 [c]For we have not an high Priest, which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in all things tempted in like sort, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore go boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
7 [a]Who in the [b]days of his flesh did offer up prayers and supplications, with strong crying and tears unto him, that was able to [c]save him from death, and was also heard in that which he feared.
8 And though he were the Son, yet [d]learned he obedience, by the things which he suffered.
9 [e]And being [f]consecrated, was made the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him:
18 By Christ’s power, whom Judas betrayeth, 6 the soldiers are cast down to the ground. 13 Christ is led to Annas, and from him to Caiaphas. 22, 23 His answer to the officer that smote him with a rod. 28 Being delivered to Pilate, 36 he declareth his kingdom.
1 When [a]Jesus had spoken these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook (A)Kidron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.
2 And Judas which betrayed him knew also the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
3 (B)[b]Judas then, after he had received a band of men and officers of the high Priests, and of the Pharisees, came thither with lanterns and torches, and weapons.
4 [c]Then Jesus, knowing all things that should come unto him, went forth and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them, I am he. Now Judas also which betrayed him, stood with them.
6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went away backwards, and fell to the ground.
7 Then he asked them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
8 [d]Jesus answered, I said unto you, that I am he: therefore if ye seek me, let these go their way.
9 This was that the word might be fulfilled which he spake, (C)Of them which thou gavest me, have I lost none.
10 [e]Then Simon Peter having a sword, drew it, and smote the high Priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. Now the servants name was Malchus.
11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: shall I not drink of the cup which my Father hath given me?
12 Then the band and the captain, and the officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him.
13 [f]And led him away to (D)Annas first (for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, which was the high Priest that same year.)
14 (E)And Caiaphas was he, that gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15 ¶ (F)[g]Now Simon Peter followed Jesus, and another disciple, and that disciple was known of the high Priest: therefore he went in with Jesus into the hall of the high Priest.
16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out the other disciple which was known unto the high Priest, and spake to her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 Then said the maid that kept the door, unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He said, I am not.
18 And the servants and officers stood there, which had made a fire of coals: for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter also stood among them, and warmed himself.
19 ¶ ([h]The high Priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine,
20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world: I ever taught in the Synagogue and in the Temple, whither the Jews resort continually, and in secret have I said nothing.
21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me what I said unto them: behold, they know what I said.
22 When he had spoken these things, one of the officers which stood by, smote Jesus with his rod, saying, Answerest thou the high Priest so?
23 Jesus answered him, If I have evil spoken, bear witness of the evil: but if I have well spoken, why smitest thou me?
24 ¶ (G)Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high Priest.)
25 (H)[i]And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself, and they said unto him, Art not thou also of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
26 One of the servants of the high Priest, his cousin whose ear Peter smote off, said, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
27 Peter then denied again, and immediately the cock crew.
28 (I)[j]Then led they Jesus from [k]Caiaphas into the common hall. Now it was morning, and they themselves went not into the common hall, lest they should be (J)defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.
29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
30 They answered, and said unto him, If he were not an evil doer, we would not have delivered him unto thee.
31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him after your own Law. Then the Jews said unto him, [l]It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.
32 It was that the word of Jesus (K)might be fulfilled which he spake, [m]signifying what death he should die.
33 (L)So Pilate entered into the common hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the king of the Jews?
34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou that of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation, and the high Priest have delivered thee unto me. What hast thou done?
36 [n]Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, my servants would surely fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
37 Pilate then said unto him, Art thou a King then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a King: for this cause am I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth: everyone that is of the truth, heareth my voice.
38 [o]Pilate said unto him, [p]What is truth? And when he had said that, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, I find in him no cause at all.
39 (M)But you have a custom that I should deliver you one loose at the Passover: will ye then that I loose unto you the King of the Jews?
40 (N)Then [q]cried they all again, saying, Not him, but Barabbas: now this Barabbas was a murderer.
19 Pilate, when Christ was scourged, 2 and crowned with thorns, 4 was desirous to let him loose: 8 but being overcome with the outrage of the Jews, 16 he delivereth him to be crucified. 26 Jesus committeth his mother to the disciple. 30 Having tasted vinegar, he dieth: 34 and being dead, his side is pierced with a spear. 40 He is buried.
1 Then (O)Pilate took Jesus and [r]scourged him.
2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple garment,
3 And said, Hail King of the Jews. And they smote him with their rods.
4 [s]Then Pilate went forth again, and said unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know, that I find no fault in him at all.
5 Then came Jesus forth wearing a crown of thorns, and a purple garment. And Pilate said unto them, Behold the man.
6 Then when the high Priests and officers saw him, they cried, saying, [t]Crucify, crucify him. Pilate said unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
8 ¶ [u]When Pilate then heard that word, he was the more afraid,
9 And went again into the common hall, and said unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him none answer.
10 Then said Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to loose thee?
11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee, hath the greater sin.
12 From thenceforth Pilate sought to loose him, but the Jews cried, saying, If thou deliver him, thou art not Caesar’s friend: for whosoever maketh himself a King, speaketh against Caesar.
13 ¶ [v]When Pilate heard this word, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place called the pavement, and in Hebrew, [w]Gabbatha.
14 And it was the Preparation of the Passover, and about the sixth hour: and he said unto the Jews, Behold your King.
15 But they cried, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The high Priests answered, We have no King but Caesar.
16 [x]Then delivered he him unto them, to be crucified. (P)And they took Jesus, and led him away.
17 And he bare his own cross, and came into a place named of dead men’s skulls, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha:
18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
19 ¶ [y]And Pilate wrote also a title, and put it on the cross, and it was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified, was near to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
21 Then said the high Priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews, but that he said, I am the King of the Jews.
22 Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.
23 ¶ [z]Then the (Q)soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments (and made four parts, to every soldier a part) and his coat: and the coat was without seam woven from the top throughout.
24 ¶ Therefore they said one to another, Let us not divide it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be. This was that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, (R)They parted my garments among them, and on my coat did cast lots. So the soldiers did these things indeed.
25 ¶ [aa]Then stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 And when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son.
27 Then said he to the disciple, Behold thy mother: and from that hour, the disciple took her home unto him.
28 ¶ [ab]After, when Jesus knew that all things were performed, that the (S)Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, I thirst.
29 And there was set a [ac]vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar: and put it about an Hyssop stalk, and put it to his mouth.
30 Now when Jesus had received of the vinegar, he said, It is finished, and bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
31 [ad]The Jews then (because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day: for that Sabbath was an high day) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken down.
32 Then came the soldiers and brake the legs of the first, and of the other, which was crucified with Jesus.
33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs.
34 [ae]But one of the soldiers with a spear [af]pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35 And he that saw it, bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe it.
36 For these things were done, that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (T)Not a bone of him shall be broken.
37 And again another Scripture saith, (U)They shall see him whom they have thrust through.
38 (V)[ag]And after these things, Joseph of Arimathea (who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews) besought Pilate that he might take down the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave him license. He came then and took Jesus’ body.
39 And there came (W)also Nicodemus (which first came to Jesus by night) and brought of myrrh and aloes mingled together about an hundred pounds.
40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wrapped it in linen clothes with the odors, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
41 And in that place where Jesus was crucified, was a garden, and in the garden a new sepulcher, wherein was [ah]never man yet laid.
42 There then laid they Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation day, for the sepulcher was near.
