Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
9 For you have taken refuge in the Lord,
my shelter, the Most High.
10 No harm will overtake[a] you;
no illness[b] will come near your home.[c]
11 For he will order his angels[d]
to protect you in all you do.[e]
12 They will lift you up in their hands,
so you will not slip and fall on a stone.[f]
13 You will subdue[g] a lion and a snake;[h]
you will trample underfoot a young lion and a serpent.
14 The Lord says,[i]
“Because he is devoted to me, I will deliver him;
I will protect him[j] because he is loyal to me.[k]
15 When he calls out to me, I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble;
I will rescue him and bring him honor.
16 I will satisfy him with long life,[l]
and will let him see my salvation.”
17 After Abram[a] returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet Abram[b] in the Valley of Shaveh (known as the King’s Valley).[c] 18 Melchizedek king of Salem[d] brought out bread and wine. (Now he was the priest of the Most High God.)[e] 19 He blessed Abram, saying,
“Blessed be Abram by[f] the Most High God,
Creator[g] of heaven and earth.[h]
20 Worthy of praise is[i] the Most High God,
who delivered[j] your enemies into your hand.”
Abram gave Melchizedek[k] a tenth of everything.
21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and take the possessions for yourself.” 22 But Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I raise my hand[l] to the Lord, the Most High God, Creator of heaven and earth, and vow[m] 23 that I will take nothing[n] belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal. That way you can never say, ‘It is I[o] who made Abram rich.’ 24 I will take nothing[p] except compensation for what the young men have eaten.[q] As for the share of the men who went with me—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre—let them take their share.”
Exhortation to Mutual Acceptance
7 Receive one another, then, just as Christ also received you, to God’s glory. 8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised[a] on behalf of God’s truth to confirm the promises made to the fathers,[b] 9 and thus the Gentiles glorify God for his mercy.[c] As it is written, “Because of this I will confess you among the Gentiles, and I will sing praises to your name.”[d] 10 And again it says: “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.”[e] 11 And again, “Praise the Lord all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him.”[f] 12 And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, and the one who rises to rule over the Gentiles, in him will the Gentiles hope.”[g] 13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in him,[h] so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
