Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
13 Do (C)return, Lord; (D)how long will it be?
And [b]be (E)sorry for Your servants.
14 (F)Satisfy us in the morning with Your graciousness,
That we may (G)sing for joy and rejoice all our days.
15 (H)Make us glad [c]according to the days You have afflicted us,
And the (I)years we have seen [d]evil.
16 Let Your (J)work appear to Your servants
And Your (K)majesty [e]to their children.
17 May the (L)kindness of the Lord our God be upon us;
And [f](M)confirm for us the work of our hands;
Yes, [g]confirm the work of our hands.
13 Hear and (A)testify against the house of Jacob,”
Declares the Lord God, the God of armies.
14 “For on the day that I punish Israel’s offenses,
I will also punish the altars of (B)Bethel;
The horns of the altar will be cut off,
And will fall to the ground.
15 I will also strike the (C)winter house together with the (D)summer house;
The houses of [a](E)ivory will also perish,
And the (F)great houses will come to an end,”
Declares the Lord.
“Yet You Have Not Returned to Me”
4 Hear this word, you [b]cows of (G)Bashan who are on the (H)mountain of Samaria,
Who (I)exploit the poor, who oppress the needy,
[c]And say to their [d]husbands, “Bring now, that we may (J)drink!”
2 The Lord [e]God has (K)sworn by His (L)holiness,
“For behold, the days are coming upon you
When [f]they will take you away with (M)meat hooks,
And the last of you with (N)fish hooks.
3 You will (O)go out through holes in the walls,
One in front of the other,
And you [g]will be hurled to Harmon,” declares the Lord.
4 “Enter Bethel and do wrong;
In Gilgal multiply wrongdoing!
(P)Bring your sacrifices every morning,
Your tithes every three days.
5 [h]Offer a (Q)thanksgiving offering also from that which is leavened,
And proclaim (R)[i]voluntary offerings, make them known.
For so you (S)love to do, you sons of Israel,”
Declares the Lord God.
Tradition and Commandment
15 (A)Then some Pharisees and scribes *came to Jesus (B)from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they (C)do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” 3 And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves also break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘(D)Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘(E)The one who speaks evil of father or mother is to [a]be put to death.’ 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been [b]given to God,” 6 he is not to [c]honor his father or mother.’ And by this you have invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you, by saying:
