Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 30[a]
A psalm, a song used at the dedication of the temple;[b] by David.
30 I will praise you, O Lord, for you lifted me up,[c]
and did not allow my enemies to gloat[d] over me.
2 O Lord my God,
I cried out to you and you healed me.[e]
3 O Lord, you pulled me[f] up from Sheol;
you rescued me from among those descending into the grave.[g]
4 Sing to the Lord, you faithful followers[h] of his;
give thanks to his holy name.[i]
5 For his anger lasts only a brief moment,
and his good favor restores one’s life.[j]
One may experience sorrow during the night,
but joy arrives in the morning.[k]
6 In my self-confidence I said,
“I will never be shaken.”[l]
7 O Lord, in your good favor you made me secure.[m]
Then you rejected me[n] and I was terrified.
8 To you, O Lord, I cried out;
I begged the Lord for mercy:[o]
9 “What[p] profit is there in taking my life,[q]
in my descending into the Pit?[r]
Can the dust of the grave[s] praise you?
Can it declare your loyalty?[t]
10 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me.
O Lord, deliver me.”[u]
11 Then you turned my lament into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and covered me with joy.[v]
12 So now[w] my heart[x] will sing to you and not be silent;
O Lord my God, I will always[y] give thanks to you.
צ (Tsade)
18 Cry out[a] from your heart[b] to the Lord,[c]
O wall of Daughter Zion![d]
Make your tears flow like a river
all day and all night long![e]
Do not rest;
do not let your tears[f] stop!
ק (Qof)
19 Get up! Cry out in the night
when the night watches start![g]
Pour out your heart[h] like water
before the face of the Lord![i]
Lift up your hands[j] to him
for your children’s lives;[k]
they are fainting[l] from hunger
at every street corner.[m]

Jerusalem Speaks
20 Look, O Lord! Consider![n]
Whom have you ever afflicted[o] like this?
Should women eat their offspring,[p]
their healthy infants?[q]
Should priest and prophet
be killed in the Lord’s[r] sanctuary?
ש (Sin/Shin)
21 The young boys and old men
lie dead on the ground in the streets.
My young women[s] and my young men
have fallen by the sword.
You killed them when you were angry;[t]
you slaughtered them without mercy.[u]

Ministry in Capernaum
31 So[a] he went down to Capernaum,[b] a town[c] in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he began to teach the people.[d] 32 They[e] were amazed[f] at his teaching, because he spoke[g] with authority.[h]
33 Now[i] in the synagogue[j] there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean[k] demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! Leave us alone,[l] Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One[m] of God.” 35 But[n] Jesus rebuked him:[o] “Silence! Come out of him!”[p] Then, after the demon threw the man[q] down in their midst, he came out of him without hurting him.[r] 36 They[s] were all amazed and began to say[t] to one another, “What’s happening here?[u] For with authority and power[v] he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 So[w] the news[x] about him spread into all areas of the region.[y]
