Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
12 When Peter saw this, he declared to the people, “Men of Israel,[a] why are you amazed at this? Why[b] do you stare at us as if we had made this man[c] walk by our own power or piety? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,[d] the God of our forefathers,[e] has glorified[f] his servant[g] Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected[h] in the presence of Pilate after he had decided[i] to release him. 14 But you rejected[j] the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a man who was a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed[k] the Originator[l] of life, whom God raised[m] from the dead. To this fact we are witnesses![n] 16 And on the basis of faith in Jesus’[o] name,[p] his very name has made this man—whom you see and know—strong. The[q] faith that is through Jesus[r] has given him this complete health in the presence[s] of you all. 17 And now, brothers, I know you acted in ignorance,[t] as your rulers did too. 18 But the things God foretold[u] long ago through[v] all the prophets—that his Christ[w] would suffer—he has fulfilled in this way. 19 Therefore repent and turn back so that your sins may be wiped out,
Psalm 4[a]
For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a psalm of David.
4 When I call out, answer me,
O God who vindicates me.[b]
Though I am hemmed in, you will lead me into a wide, open place.[c]
Have mercy on me[d] and respond to[e] my prayer.
2 You men,[f] how long will you try to turn my honor into shame?[g]
How long[h] will you love what is worthless[i]
and search for what is deceptive?[j] (Selah)
3 Realize that[k] the Lord shows the godly special favor;[l]
the Lord responds[m] when I cry out to him.
4 Tremble with fear and do not sin.[n]
Meditate as you lie in bed, and repent of your ways.[o] (Selah)
5 Offer the prescribed sacrifices[p]
and trust in the Lord.[q]
6 Many say, “Who can show us anything good?”
Smile upon us, Lord![r]
7 You make me happier[s]
than those who have abundant grain and wine.[t]
8 I will lie down and sleep peacefully,[u]
for you, Lord, make me safe and secure.[v]
3 (See what sort of love the Father has given to us: that[a] we should be called God’s children—and indeed[b] we are![c] For this reason[d] the world does not know us: because it did not know him.[e] 2 Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be[f] has not yet been revealed. We[g] know that[h] whenever[i] it[j] is revealed[k] we will be like him, because[l] we will see him just as he is.[m] 3 And everyone who has this hope focused[n] on him purifies[o] himself, just as Jesus[p] is pure).[q]
4 Everyone who practices sin[r] also practices lawlessness;[s] indeed,[t] sin is lawlessness. 5 And you know that Jesus[u] was revealed to take away[v] sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 Everyone who resides[w] in him does not sin;[x] everyone who sins has neither seen him nor known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness[y] is righteous, just as Jesus[z] is righteous.
Jesus Makes a Final Appearance
36 While they were saying these things, Jesus[a] himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”[b] 37 But they were startled and terrified, thinking[c] they saw a ghost.[d] 38 Then[e] he said to them, “Why are you frightened,[f] and why do doubts[g] arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet; it’s me![h] Touch me and see; a ghost[i] does not have flesh and bones like you see I have.” 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.[j] 41 And while they still could not believe it[k] (because of their joy) and were amazed,[l] he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”[m] 42 So[n] they gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in front of them.
Jesus’ Final Commission
44 Then[o] he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me[p] in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms[q] must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the scriptures,[r] 46 and said to them, “Thus it stands written that the Christ[s] would suffer[t] and would rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance[u] for the forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed[v] in his name to all nations,[w] beginning from Jerusalem.[x] 48 You are witnesses[y] of these things.
