The Creation of the World
1 In the (A)beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was (B)without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 And God said, (C)“Let there be light”, and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
Ascribe to the Lord Glory
A Psalm of David.
29 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,[a]
(A)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in (B)the splendour of holiness.[b]
3 The voice of the Lord is over (C)the waters;
the God of glory (D)thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is (E)powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks (F)the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon to (G)skip like a calf,
and (H)Sirion like a young (I)wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of (J)Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord makes (K)the deer give birth[c]
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
10 The Lord sits enthroned over (L)the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned (M)as king for ever.
11 May the Lord give (N)strength to his people!

Paul in Ephesus
19 And it happened that while (A)Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed (B)through the inland[a] country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, (C)“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, (D)we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, (E)“Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into (F)John's baptism.” 4 And Paul said, (G)“John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people (H)to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, (I)they were baptized in[b] the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And (J)when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and (K)they began speaking in tongues and (L)prophesying. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
4 (A)John appeared, baptizing in (B)the wilderness and proclaiming (C)a baptism of (D)repentance (E)for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, (F)confessing their sins. 6 Now John was (G)clothed with camel's hair and (H)wore a leather belt round his waist and ate (I)locusts and (J)wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, (K)“After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 (L)I have baptized you with water, but (M)he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
The Baptism of Jesus
9 (N)In those days Jesus (O)came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he (P)saw (Q)the heavens being torn open (R)and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And (S)a voice came from heaven, (T)“You are my beloved Son;[a] with you I am well pleased.”
