Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 63[a]
A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness.[b]
63 O God, you are my God. I long for you.[c]
My soul thirsts[d] for you,
my flesh yearns for you,
in a dry and parched[e] land where there is no water.
2 Yes,[f] in the sanctuary I have seen you,[g]
and witnessed[h] your power and splendor.
3 Because[i] experiencing[j] your loyal love is better than life itself,
my lips will praise you.
4 For this reason[k] I will praise you while I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.[l]
5 As with choice meat[m] you satisfy my soul.[n]
My mouth joyfully praises you,[o]
6 whenever[p] I remember you on my bed,
and think about you during the nighttime hours.
7 For you are my deliverer;[q]
under your wings[r] I rejoice.
8 My soul[s] pursues you;[t]
your right hand upholds me.
9 Enemies seek to destroy my life,[u]
but they will descend into the depths of the earth.[v]
10 Each one will be handed over to the sword;[w]
their corpses will be eaten by jackals.[x]
11 But the king[y] will rejoice in God;
everyone who takes oaths in his name[z] will boast,
for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up.[aa]
7 The Lord confirms this oath[a] by the arrogance of Jacob:[b]
“I swear[c] I will never forget all you have done![d]
8 Because of this the earth[e] will quake,[f]
and all who live in it will mourn.
The whole earth[g] will rise like the Nile River,[h]
it will surge upward[i] and then grow calm,[j] like the Nile in Egypt.[k]
9 In that day,” says the Sovereign Lord, “I will make the sun set at noon
and make the earth dark in the middle of the day.[l]
10 I will turn your festivals into funerals[m]
and all your songs into funeral dirges.
I will make everyone wear funeral clothes[n]
and cause every head to be shaved bald.[o]
I will make you mourn as if you had lost your only son;[p]
when it ends it will indeed have been a bitter day.[q]
11 Be certain of this,[r] the time is[s] coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine through the land—
not a shortage of food or water
but an end to divine revelation.[t]
12 People[u] will stagger from sea to sea,[v]
and from the north around to the east.
They will wander about looking for a message from the Lord,
but they will not find any.[w]
13 In that day your[x] beautiful young women[y] and your[z] young men will faint from thirst.[aa]
14 These are the ones who now take oaths[ab] in the name of the sinful idol goddess[ac] of Samaria.
They vow,[ad] ‘As surely as your god[ae] lives, O Dan,’ or, ‘As surely as your beloved one[af] lives, O Beer Sheba!’
But they will fall down and not get up again.”
20 Brothers and sisters,[a] do not be children in your thinking. Instead, be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. 21 It is written in the law: “By people with strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, yet not even in this way will they listen to me,”[b] says the Lord. 22 So then, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and unbelievers or uninformed people enter, will they not say that you have lost your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or uninformed person enters, he will be convicted by all, he will be called to account by all. 25 The secrets of his heart are disclosed, and in this way he will fall down with his face to the ground and worship God, declaring, “God is really among you.”
