Psalm 63

Psalm 63[a]

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,(A)
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.(B)

I have seen you in the sanctuary(C)
    and beheld your power and your glory.(D)
Because your love is better than life,(E)
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,(F)
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.(G)
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;(H)
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.(I)
Because you are my help,(J)
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.(K)
I cling to you;(L)
    your right hand upholds me.(M)

Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;(N)
    they will go down to the depths of the earth.(O)
10 They will be given over to the sword(P)
    and become food for jackals.(Q)

11 But the king will rejoice in God;
    all who swear by God will glory in him,(R)
    while the mouths of liars will be silenced.(S)

Amos 8:7-14

The Lord has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob:(A) “I will never forget(B) anything they have done.(C)

“Will not the land tremble(D) for this,
    and all who live in it mourn?
The whole land will rise like the Nile;
    it will be stirred up and then sink
    like the river of Egypt.(E)

“In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord,

“I will make the sun go down at noon
    and darken the earth in broad daylight.(F)
10 I will turn your religious festivals(G) into mourning
    and all your singing into weeping.(H)
I will make all of you wear sackcloth(I)
    and shave(J) your heads.
I will make that time like mourning for an only son(K)
    and the end of it like a bitter day.(L)

11 “The days are coming,”(M) declares the Sovereign Lord,
    “when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
    but a famine(N) of hearing the words of the Lord.(O)
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
    and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the Lord,
    but they will not find it.(P)

13 “In that day

“the lovely young women and strong young men(Q)
    will faint because of thirst.(R)
14 Those who swear by the sin of Samaria(S)
    who say, ‘As surely as your god lives, Dan,’(T)
    or, ‘As surely as the god[a] of Beersheba(U) lives’—
    they will fall,(V) never to rise again.(W)

1 Corinthians 14:20-25

20 Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children.(A) In regard to evil be infants,(B) but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law(C) it is written:

“With other tongues
    and through the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people,
    but even then they will not listen to me,(D)
says the Lord.”[a]

22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy,(E) however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?(F) 24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets(G) of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”(H)
