7 God of armies, restore us
And make Your face shine upon us, [a]and we will be saved.
8 You removed a (A)vine from Egypt;
You (B)drove out the [b]nations and (C)planted it.
9 You (D)cleared the ground before it,
And it (E)took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shadow,
And [c]the cedars of God with its (F)branches.
11 It was sending out its branches (G)to the sea
And its shoots to the Euphrates River.
12 Why have You (H)broken down its [d]hedges,
So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?
13 A boar from the forest (I)eats it away,
And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.
The Coming Destruction of Jerusalem
6 “Flee to safety, you sons of (A)Benjamin,
From the midst of Jerusalem!
Blow a trumpet in Tekoa
And raise a warning signal over [a](B)Beth-haccerem;
For evil looks down from the (C)north,
Along with a great destruction.
2 The beautiful and (D)delicate one, (E)the daughter of Zion, I will destroy.
3 (F)Shepherds and their flocks will come to her,
They will (G)pitch their tents [b]around her,
They will pasture, each in his [c]place.
4 ‘[d](H)Prepare for war against her;
Arise, and let’s [e]attack at (I)noon.
Woe to us, for the day declines,
For the shadows of the evening lengthen!
5 Arise, and let’s [f]attack by night
And (J)destroy her [g]palaces!’”
6 For this is what the Lord of armies says:
“(K)Cut down her trees
And pile up an (L)assault ramp against Jerusalem.
This is the city to be punished,
In whose midst there is only (M)oppression.
7 (N)As a well [h]keeps its waters fresh,
So she [i]keeps fresh her wickedness.
(O)Violence and destruction are heard in her;
(P)Sickness and wounds are constantly before Me.
8 (Q)Be warned, Jerusalem,
Or [j](R)I shall be alienated from you,
And make you a desolation,
An uninhabited land.”
9 This is what the Lord of armies says:
“They will (S)thoroughly glean the (T)remnant of Israel like the vine;
Pass your hand over the branches again
Like a grape gatherer.”
10 To whom shall I speak and give warning,
That they may hear?
Behold, their (U)ears are [k]closed
And they cannot listen.
Behold, (V)the word of the Lord has become for them a rebuke;
They take no delight in it.
People’s Division over Jesus
40 Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is (A)the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the [a]Christ.” But others were saying, “(B)Surely the [b]Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He? 42 Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (C)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So (D)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 And (E)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
45 The (F)officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The (G)officers answered, “(H)Never has a man spoken in this way!” 47 The Pharisees then replied to them, “(I)You have not been led astray too, have you? 48 (J)Not one of (K)the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!” 50 (L)Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 “(M)Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered and said to him, “(N)You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.”
