Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Lord’s Covenant with David and Israel’s Afflictions.
A [a]Maskil of [b]Ethan [c]the Ezrahite.
89 I will (A)sing of the graciousness of the Lord forever;
To all generations I will (B)make Your (C)faithfulness known with my mouth.
2 For I have said, “(D)Graciousness will be built up forever;
In the heavens You will establish Your (E)faithfulness.”
3 “I have made a covenant with (F)My chosen;
I have (G)sworn to My servant David,
4 I will establish your [d](H)descendants forever
And build up your (I)throne to all generations.” Selah
15 Blessed are the people who know the [a](A)joyful sound!
Lord, they walk in the (B)light of Your face.
16 In (C)Your name they rejoice all the day,
And by Your righteousness they are exalted.
17 For You are the glory of (D)their strength,
And by Your favor [b]our (E)horn is exalted.
18 For our (F)shield belongs to the Lord,
[c]And our king to the (G)Holy One of Israel.
8 “Therefore this is what the Lord of armies says: ‘Because you have not obeyed My words, 9 behold, I will (A)send and take all the families of the north,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, (B)My servant, and will bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these surrounding nations; and I will [a]completely destroy them and (C)make them an object of horror and [b]hissing, and an everlasting place of ruins. 10 Moreover, I will (D)eliminate from them the voice of jubilation and the voice of joy, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the (E)sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. 11 (F)This entire land will be a place of ruins and an object of horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for (G)seventy years.
Babylon Will Be Judged
12 ‘Then it will be (H)when seventy years are completed I will (I)punish the king of Babylon and that nation,’ declares the Lord, ‘for their wrongdoing, and the land of the Chaldeans; and (J)I will make it an everlasting desolation. 13 I will bring upon that land all My words which I have pronounced against it, all that is written in (K)this book which Jeremiah has prophesied against (L)all the nations. 14 ([c]For (M)many nations and great kings will make slaves of them, even them; and I will (N)repay them according to their deeds and according to the work of their hands.)’”
7 You were (A)running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion did not come from (B)Him who calls you. 9 (C)A little [a]leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. 10 (D)I have confidence [b]in you in the Lord, that you (E)will adopt no other view; but the one who is (F)disturbing you will bear the punishment, whoever he is. 11 But as for me, brothers and sisters, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still (G)persecuted? Then (H)the stumbling block of the cross has been eliminated. 12 I wish that (I)those who are troubling you would even [c](J)emasculate themselves.
