7 For it is (A)for your sake that I have borne reproach,
that dishonour has covered my face.
8 I have become (B)a stranger to my brothers,
an alien to my mother's sons.
9 For (C)zeal for your house has consumed me,
and (D)the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
10 When I wept and humbled[a] my soul with fasting,
it became my reproach.
11 When I made (A)sackcloth my clothing,
I became (B)a byword to them.
12 I am the talk of those who (C)sit in the gate,
and the drunkards make (D)songs about me.
13 But as for me, my (E)prayer is to you, O Lord.
At (F)an acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
14 Deliver me
from sinking in (G)the mire;
(H)let me be delivered from my enemies
and from (I)the deep waters.
15 Let not the flood sweep over me,
or the deep swallow me up,
or (J)the pit close (K)its mouth over me.
18 Then they said, (A)“Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, (B)for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. (C)Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words.”
19 Hear me, O Lord,
and (D)listen to the voice of my adversaries.
20 (E)Should good be repaid with evil?
Yet (F)they have dug a pit for my life.
(G)Remember how I stood before you
to speak good for them,
to turn away your wrath from them.
21 Therefore (H)deliver up their children to famine;
give them over to the power of the sword;
let their wives become childless (I)and widowed.
May their men meet death by pestilence,
their youths be struck down by the sword in battle.
22 (J)May a cry be heard from their houses,
when you bring the plunderer suddenly upon them!
For (K)they have dug a pit to take me
(L)and laid snares for my feet.
23 Yet (M)you, O Lord, know
all their plotting to kill me.
(N)Forgive not their iniquity,
nor blot out their sin from your sight.
Let them be overthrown before you;
deal with them in the time of your anger.
The Apostles Arrested and Freed
17 But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of (A)the Sadducees), and filled with (B)jealousy 18 they arrested the apostles and (C)put them in the public prison. 19 But during the night (D)an angel of the Lord (E)opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all (F)the words of (G)this (H)Life.” 21 And when they heard this, (I)they entered the temple (J)at daybreak and began to teach.
Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council and all the senate of the people of Israel and sent to the prison to have them brought. 22 But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, 23 “We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside.” 24 Now when (K)the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. 25 And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison (L)are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” 26 Then (M)the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for (N)they were afraid of being stoned by the people.
