Psalm 105:1-11

Psalm 105[a]

105 Give thanks to the Lord.
Call on his name.
Make known his accomplishments among the nations.
Sing to him.
Make music to him.
Tell about all his miraculous deeds.
Boast about his holy name.
Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
Seek the Lord and the strength he gives.
Seek his presence continually.
Recall the miraculous deeds he performed,
his mighty acts and the judgments he decreed,[b]
O children[c] of Abraham,[d] God’s[e] servant,
you descendants[f] of Jacob, God’s[g] chosen ones.
He is the Lord our God;
he carries out judgment throughout the earth.[h]
He always remembers his covenantal decree,
the promise he made[i] to a thousand generations—
the promise[j] he made to Abraham,
the promise he made by oath to Isaac.
10 He gave it to Jacob as a decree,
to Israel as a lasting promise,[k]
11 saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
as the portion of your inheritance.”

Psalm 105:37-45

37 He brought his people[a] out enriched[b] with silver and gold;
none of his tribes stumbled.
38 Egypt was happy when they left,
for they were afraid of them.[c]
39 He spread out a cloud for a cover,[d]
and provided a fire to light up the night.
40 They asked for food,[e] and he sent quail;
he satisfied them with food from the sky.[f]
41 He opened up a rock and water flowed out;
a river ran through dry regions.
42 Yes,[g] he remembered the sacred promise[h]
he made to Abraham his servant.
43 When he led his people out, they rejoiced;
his chosen ones shouted with joy.[i]
44 He handed the territory of nations over to them,
and they took possession of what other peoples had produced,[j]
45 so that they might keep his commands
and obey[k] his laws.
Praise the Lord.

Proverbs 4:10-27

10 Listen, my child,[a] and accept my words,
so that[b] the years of your life will be many.[c]
11 I hereby guide you[d] in the way of wisdom
and I lead you in upright paths.[e]
12 When you walk, your steps[f] will not be hampered,[g]
and when you run,[h] you will not stumble.
13 Hold on to instruction,[i] do not let it go;
protect it,[j] because it is your life.
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked
or walk[k] in the way of those who are evil.
15 Avoid it, do not go on it;
turn away from it, and go on.[l]
16 For they cannot sleep[m] unless they cause harm;[n]
they are robbed of sleep[o] until they make someone stumble.[p]
17 Indeed they have eaten[q] bread gained from wickedness[r]
and drink[s] wine obtained from violence.[t]
18 But the path of the righteous is like the bright morning light,[u]
growing brighter and brighter[v] until full day.[w]
19 The way of the wicked is like gloomy darkness;
they do not know what they stumble over.[x]

20 My child, pay attention to my words;
listen attentively[y] to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart[z] from your sight,
guard[aa] them within your heart;[ab]
22 for they are life to those who find them
and healing to one’s entire body.[ac]
23 Guard your heart[ad] with all vigilance,[ae]
for from it are the sources[af] of life.
24 Remove perverse speech[ag] from your mouth;[ah]
keep devious talk far from your lips.[ai]
25 Let your eyes look directly[aj] in front of you
and let your gaze[ak] look straight before you.
26 Make the path for your feet[al] level,[am]
so that[an] all your ways may be established.[ao]
27 Do not turn[ap] to the right or to the left;
turn yourself[aq] away from evil.[ar]

Luke 6:12-19

Choosing the Twelve Apostles

12 Now[a] it was during this time that Jesus[b] went out to the mountain[c] to pray, and he spent all night[d] in prayer to God.[e] 13 When[f] morning came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles:[g] 14 Simon[h] (whom he named Peter), and his brother Andrew; and James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,[i] 15 Matthew, Thomas,[j] James the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot,[k] 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot,[l] who became a traitor.

The Sermon on the Plain

17 Then[m] he came down with them and stood on a level place.[n] And a large number[o] of his disciples had gathered[p] along with[q] a vast multitude from all over Judea, from[r] Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.[s] They came to hear him and to be healed[t] of their diseases, 18 and those who suffered from[u] unclean[v] spirits were cured. 19 The[w] whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power[x] was coming out from him and healing them all.
