Version
Psalm 114

God’s Rescue of Israel from Egypt.

114 When Israel went forth (A)from Egypt,
The house of Jacob from a people of a (B)foreign language,
Judah became (C)His sanctuary;
Israel, (D)His dominion.

The (E)sea looked and fled;
The (F)Jordan turned back.
The mountains (G)skipped like rams,
The hills, like lambs.
What (H)ails you, sea, that you flee?
Jordan, that you turn back?
Mountains, that you skip like rams?
Hills, like lambs?

(I)Tremble, earth, before the Lord,
Before the God of Jacob,
Who (J)turned the rock into a (K)pool of water,
The (L)flint into a fountain of water.

Jonah 2

Jonah’s Prayer

[a]Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God (A)from the stomach of the fish, and he said,

“I (B)called out of my distress to the Lord,
And He answered me.
I called for help from the [b]depth of (C)Sheol;
You heard my voice.
For You (D)threw me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the current flowed around me.
All Your (E)breakers and waves passed over me.
So I said, ‘I have been (F)cast out [c]of Your sight.
Nevertheless I will look again (G)toward Your holy temple.’
(H)Water encompassed me to the [d]point of death.
The (I)deep flowed around me,
Seaweed was wrapped around my head.
I (J)descended to the base of the mountains.
The earth with its (K)bars was around me forever,
But You have (L)brought up my life from [e]the pit, Lord my God.
While [f]I was (M)fainting away,
I (N)remembered the Lord,
And my (O)prayer came to You,
Into (P)Your holy temple.
Those who (Q)are followers of worthless [g]idols
Abandon their faithfulness,
But I will (R)sacrifice to You
With a voice of thanksgiving.
That which I have vowed I will (S)pay.
(T)Salvation is from the Lord.”

10 Then the Lord commanded the (U)fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.

Matthew 12:38-42

The Desire for Signs

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, (A)we want to see a [a]sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, (B)An evil and adulterous generation craves a [b]sign; and so no [c]sign will be given to it except the [d]sign of Jonah the prophet; 40 for just as (C)Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will (D)the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for (E)three days and three nights. 41 (F)The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because (G)they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something (H)greater than Jonah is here. 42 (I)The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something (J)greater than Solomon is here.
