II. The Mission in Jerusalem

Peter’s Speech at Pentecost. 14 [a]Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them, “You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words.

Acts 2:22-32

22 You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.(A) 23 This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him.(B) 24 But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it.(C) 25 For David says of him:

‘I saw the Lord ever before me,(D)
    with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
26 Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted;
    my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
27 because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,
    nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption.(E)
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence.’

29 My brothers, one can confidently say to you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried, and his tomb is in our midst to this day. 30 But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne,(F) 31 he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld nor did his flesh see corruption.(G) 32 God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses.

Psalm 16

Psalm 16[a]

God the Supreme Good

(A)A miktam[b] of David.

I

Keep me safe, O God;
    in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord,
    you are my Lord,
    you are my only good.
As for the holy ones who are in the land,
    they are noble,
    in whom is all my delight.
[c]They multiply their sorrows
    who court other gods.
Blood libations to them I will not pour out,
    nor will I take their names upon my lips.
Lord, my allotted portion and my cup,
    you have made my destiny secure.(B)
[d]Pleasant places were measured out for me;
    fair to me indeed is my inheritance.

II

I bless the Lord who counsels me;
    even at night my heart exhorts me.
I keep the Lord always before me;
    with him at my right hand, I shall never be shaken.(C)
Therefore my heart is glad, my soul rejoices;
    my body also dwells secure,
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
    nor let your devout one see the pit.[e](D)
11 You will show me the path to life,
    abounding joy in your presence,
    the delights at your right hand forever.

1 Peter 1:3-9

II. The Gift and Call of God in Baptism

Blessing. [a]Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,(A) to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you(B) who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time. [b]In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials,(C) so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.(D) Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,(E) as you attain the goal of [your] faith, the salvation of your souls.

John 20:19-31

19 On the evening of that first day of the week,(A) when the doors were locked, where the disciples[a] were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.[b] The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.(B) 21 [c][Jesus] said to them again,(C) “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 [d]And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,(D) “Receive the holy Spirit. 23 [e](E)Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Thomas. 24 Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”(F) 26 Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”(G) 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” 28 [f](H)Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 [g]Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me?(I) Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Conclusion.[h] 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of [his] disciples that are not written in this book.(J) 31 But these are written that you may [come to] believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.(K)
