Psalm 112:1-9

The Righteous Will Never Be Moved

112 [a] (A)Praise the Lord!
(B)Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
    who (C)greatly delights in his commandments!
His (D)offspring will be mighty in the land;
    (E)the generation of the upright will be blessed.
(F)Wealth and riches are in his house,
    and his (G)righteousness endures for ever.
Light dawns in the darkness (H)for the upright;
    he is gracious, merciful, and (I)righteous.
It is well with the man who (J)deals generously and lends;
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will (K)never be moved;
    (L)he will be remembered for ever.
He is not (M)afraid of bad news;
    his (N)heart is firm, (O)trusting in the Lord.
His heart is steady; he will not be afraid,
    until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
He has (P)distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures for ever;
    his (Q)horn is exalted in honour.

Psalm 112:10

10 The wicked man sees it and is angry;
    he (A)gnashes his teeth and (B)melts away;
    (C)the desire of the wicked will perish!

Isaiah 29:13-16

13 And the Lord said:
“Because (A)this people (B)draw near with their mouth
    and honour me with their lips,
    while their hearts are far from me,
and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
14 therefore, behold, (C)I will again
    do wonderful things with this people,
    with wonder upon wonder;
and (D)the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
    and the discernment of their discerning men shall be hidden.”
15 Ah, (E)you who hide deep from the Lord your counsel,
    whose deeds are (F)in the dark,
    and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”
16 (G)You turn things upside down!
Shall the potter be regarded as the clay,
that the thing made should say of its maker,
    “He did not make me”;
or the thing formed say of him who formed it,
    “He has no understanding”?

Mark 7:1-8

Traditions and Commandments

(A)Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes (B)who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were (C)defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash[a] their hands, holding to (D)the tradition of (E)the elders, and when they come from the market-place, they do not eat unless they wash.[b] And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as (F)the washing of (G)cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.[c]) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to (H)the tradition of (I)the elders, (J)but eat with (K)defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you (L)hypocrites, as it is written,

(M)“‘This people honours me with their lips,
    but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as (N)doctrines the commandments of men.’

You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”
