Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 72[a]
For[b] Solomon.
72 O God, grant the king the ability to make just decisions.[c]
Grant the king’s son[d] the ability to make fair decisions.[e]
2 Then he will judge[f] your people fairly,
and your oppressed ones[g] equitably.
3 The mountains will bring news of peace to the people,
and the hills will announce justice.[h]
4 He will defend[i] the oppressed among the people;
he will deliver[j] the children[k] of the poor
and crush the oppressor.
5 People will fear[l] you[m] as long as the sun and moon remain in the sky,
for generation after generation.[n]
6 He[o] will descend like rain on the mown grass,[p]
like showers that drench[q] the earth.[r]
7 During his days the godly will flourish;[s]
peace will prevail as long as the moon remains in the sky.[t]
The Branch of the Lord
2 At that time[a]
the crops given by the Lord will bring admiration and honor;[b]
the produce of the land will be a source of pride and delight
to those who remain in Israel.[c]
3 Those remaining in Zion,[d] those left in Jerusalem,
will be called “holy,”[e]
all in Jerusalem who are destined to live.[f]
4 At that time[g] the Lord will wash the excrement[h] from Zion’s women,
he will rinse the bloodstains from Jerusalem’s midst,[i]
as he comes to judge
and to bring devastation.[j]
5 Then the Lord will create
over all Mount Zion[k]
and over its convocations
a cloud and smoke by day
and a bright flame of fire by night;[l]
indeed a canopy will accompany the Lord’s glorious presence.[m]
6 By day it will be a shelter to provide shade from the heat,
as well as safety and protection from the heavy downpour.[n]
A Replacement for Judas is Chosen
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain[a] called the Mount of Olives[b] (which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey[c] away). 13 When[d] they had entered Jerusalem,[e] they went to the upstairs room where they were staying. Peter[f] and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James were there.[g] 14 All these continued together in prayer with one mind, together with the women, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.[h] 15 In those days[i] Peter stood up among the believers[j] (a gathering of about 120 people) and said, 16 “Brothers,[k] the scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through[l] David concerning Judas—who became the guide for those who arrested Jesus— 17 for he was counted as one of us and received a share in this ministry.”[m]
21 Thus one of the men[a] who have accompanied us during all the time the Lord Jesus associated with[b] us, 22 beginning from his baptism by John until the day he[c] was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness of his resurrection together with us.” 23 So they[d] proposed two candidates:[e] Joseph called Barsabbas (also called Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed,[f] “Lord, you know the hearts of all. Show us which one of these two you have chosen 25 to assume the task[g] of this service[h] and apostleship from which Judas turned aside[i] to go to his own place.”[j] 26 Then[k] they cast lots for them, and the one chosen was Matthias;[l] so he was counted with the eleven apostles.[m]
