7 “Though our iniquities testify against us,
act, O Lord, (A)for your name's sake;
(B)for our backslidings are many;
(C)we have sinned against you.
8 (D)O you hope of Israel,
its saviour in time of trouble,
why should you be like a stranger in the land,
like a traveller who turns aside to tarry for a night?
9 Why should you be like a man confused,
(E)like a mighty warrior who cannot save?
Yet (F)you, O Lord, are in the midst of us,
and (G)we are called by your name;
(H)do not leave us.”
10 Thus says the Lord concerning this people:
“They have loved to wander thus;
they have not restrained their feet;
(I)therefore the Lord does not accept them;
(J)now he will remember their iniquity
and punish their sins.”
19 (A)Have you utterly rejected Judah?
Does your soul loathe Zion?
Why have you struck us down
(B)so that there is no healing for us?
(C)We looked for peace, but no good came;
(D)for a time of healing, but behold, terror.
20 (E)We acknowledge our wickedness, O Lord,
and the iniquity of our fathers,
(F)for we have sinned against you.
21 Do not spurn us, (G)for your name's sake;
do not dishonour your glorious throne;
(H)remember and do not break your covenant with us.
22 Are there any among (I)the false gods of the nations (J)that can bring rain?
Or can the heavens give showers?
Are you not he, O Lord our God?
We set our hope on you,
(K)for you do all these things.
My Soul Longs for the Courts of the Lord

84 How (C)lovely is your (D)dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts!
2 My soul (E)longs, yes, (F)faints
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to (G)the living God.
3 Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
(H)my King and my God.
4 (I)Blessed are those who dwell in your house,
ever (J)singing your praise! Selah
5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
(K)in whose heart are the highways to Zion.[b]
6 As they go through the Valley of Baca
they make it a place of springs;
(L)the early rain also covers it with (M)pools.
7 They go (N)from strength to strength;
each one (O)appears before God in Zion.
6 For (A)I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my (B)departure has come. 7 (C)I have fought the good fight, (D)I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is (E)laid up for me (F)the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, (G)the righteous judge, will award to me on (H)that Day, and not only to me but also to all (I)who have loved his appearing.
16 At my first defence no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. (A)May it not be charged against them! 17 But (B)the Lord stood by me and (C)strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and (D)all the Gentiles might hear it. So (E)I was rescued (F)from the lion's mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. (G)To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
9 He also told this parable to some (A)who trusted (B)in themselves that they were righteous, (C)and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men (D)went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, (E)standing by himself, prayed[a] (F)thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 (G)I fast twice a week; (H)I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, (I)standing far off, (J)would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but (K)beat his breast, saying, ‘God, (L)be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For (M)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
