In Praise of the Law of the Lord

Our Lord, you bless everyone
who lives right
    and obeys your Law.
You bless all those
who follow your commands
    from deep in their hearts
and who never do wrong
    or turn from you.
You have ordered us always
    to obey your teachings;
I don't ever want to stray
    from your laws.
Thinking about your commands
will keep me from doing
    some foolish thing.
I will do right and praise you
by learning to respect
    your perfect laws.
I will obey all of them!
    Don't turn your back on me.

Exodus 22:1-15

Property Laws

The Lord said:

22 If you steal an ox and slaughter or sell it, you must replace it with five oxen; if you steal a sheep and slaughter it or sell it, you must replace it with four sheep. 2-4 But if you cannot afford to replace the animals, you must be sold as a slave to pay for what you have stolen. If you steal an ox, donkey, or sheep, and are caught with it still alive, you must pay the owner double.

If you happen to kill a burglar who breaks into your home after dark, you are not guilty. But if you kill someone who breaks in during the day, you are guilty of murder.

If you allow any of your animals to stray from your property and graze[a] in someone else's field or vineyard, you must repay the damage from the best part of your own harvest of grapes and grain.

If you carelessly let a fire spread from your property to someone else's, you must pay the owner for any crops or fields destroyed by the fire.

Suppose a neighbor asks you to keep some silver or other valuables, and they are stolen from your house. If the thief is caught, the thief must repay double. But if the thief isn't caught, some judges[b] will decide if you are the guilty one.

Suppose two people claim to own the same ox or donkey or sheep or piece of clothing. Then the judges[c] must decide the case, and the guilty person will pay the owner double.

10 Suppose a neighbor who is going to be away asks you to keep a donkey or an ox or a sheep or some other animal, and it dies or gets injured or is stolen while no one is looking. 11 If you swear with me as your witness that you did not harm the animal, you do not have to replace it. Your word is enough. 12 But if the animal was stolen while in your care, you must replace it. 13 If the animal was attacked and killed by a wild animal, and you can show the remains of the dead animal to its owner, you do not have to replace it.

14 Suppose you borrow an animal from a neighbor, and it gets injured or dies while the neighbor isn't around. Then you must replace it. 15 But if something happens to the animal while the owner is present, you do not have to replace it. If you had leased the animal, the money you paid the owner will cover any harm done to it.

Hebrews 9:1-12

The Tent in Heaven

The first promise included rules for worship and a tent for worship here on earth. (A) The first part of the tent was called the holy place, and a lampstand, a table, and the sacred loaves of bread were kept there.

(B) Behind the curtain was the most holy place. (C) The gold altar for burning incense was in this holy place. The gold-covered sacred chest was also there, and inside it were three things. First, there was a gold jar filled with manna.[a] Then there was Aaron's walking stick that sprouted.[b] Finally, there were the flat stones with the Ten Commandments written on them. (D) On top of the chest were the glorious creatures with wings[c] opened out above the place of mercy.[d]

Now isn't the time to go into detail about these things. (E) But this is how everything was when the priests went each day into the first part of the tent to do their duties. (F) However, only the high priest could go into the second part of the tent, and he went in only once a year. Each time he carried blood to offer for his sins and for any sins that the people had committed without meaning to.

All of this is the Holy Spirit's way of saying no one could enter the most holy place while the tent was still the place of worship. This also has a meaning for today. It shows we cannot make our consciences clear by offering gifts and sacrifices. 10 These rules are merely about such things as eating and drinking and ceremonies for washing ourselves. And rules about physical things will last only until the time comes to change them for something better.

11 (G) Christ came as the high priest of the good things that are now here.[e] He also went into a much better tent that wasn't made by humans and that doesn't belong to this world. 12 Then Christ went once for all into the most holy place and freed us from sin forever. He did this by offering his own blood instead of the blood of goats and bulls.
