Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 15[a]
A psalm of David.
15 Lord, who may be a guest in your home?[b]
Who may live on your holy hill?[c]
2 Whoever lives a blameless life,[d]
does what is right,
and speaks honestly.[e]
3 He[f] does not slander,[g]
or do harm to others,[h]
or insult his neighbor.[i]
4 He despises a reprobate,[j]
but honors the Lord’s loyal followers.[k]
He makes firm commitments and does not renege on his promise.[l]
5 He does not charge interest when he lends his money.[m]
He does not take bribes to testify against the innocent.[n]
The one who lives like this[o] will never be shaken.
8 Moses quickly bowed[a] to the ground and worshiped 9 and said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, let my Lord[b] go among us, for we[c] are a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”
10 He said, “See, I am going to make[d] a covenant before all your people. I will do wonders such as have not been done[e] in all the earth, nor in any nation. All the people among whom you live will see the work of the Lord, for it is a fearful thing that I am doing with you.[f]
11 “Obey[g] what I am commanding you this day. I am going to drive out[h] before you the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 12 Be careful not to make[i] a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it become a snare[j] among you. 13 Rather you must destroy their altars, smash their images, and cut down their Asherah poles.[k] 14 For you must not worship[l] any other god,[m] for the Lord, whose name[n] is Jealous, is a jealous God. 15 Be careful[o] not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when[p] they prostitute themselves[q] to their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone invites you,[r] you will eat from his sacrifice; 16 and you then take[s] his daughters for your sons, and when his daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will make your sons prostitute themselves to their gods as well. 17 You must not make yourselves molten gods.
18 “You must keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days[t] you must eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you; do this[u] at the appointed time of the month Abib, for in the month Abib you came out of Egypt.
19 “Every firstborn of the womb[v] belongs to me, even every firstborn[w] of your cattle that is a male,[x] whether ox or sheep. 20 Now the firstling[y] of a donkey you may redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then break its neck.[z] You must redeem all the firstborn of your sons.
“No one will appear before me empty-handed.[aa]
21 “On six days[ab] you may labor, but on the seventh day you must rest;[ac] even at the time of plowing and of harvest[ad] you are to rest.[ae]
22 “You must observe[af] the Feast of Weeks—the firstfruits of the harvest of wheat—and the Feast of Ingathering at the end[ag] of the year. 23 At three times[ah] in the year all your men[ai] must appear before the Sovereign Lord,[aj] the God of Israel. 24 For I will drive out[ak] the nations before you and enlarge your borders; no one will covet[al] your land when you go up[am] to appear before the Lord your God three times[an] in the year.
25 “You must not offer the blood of my sacrifice with yeast; the sacrifice from the Feast of Passover must not remain until the following morning.[ao]
26 “The first of the firstfruits of your soil you must bring to the house of the Lord your God.
“You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”[ap]
27 The Lord said to Moses, “Write down[aq] these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights;[ar] he did not eat bread, and he did not drink water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.[as]
Jesus Brought Before Pilate
28 Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor’s residence.[a] (Now it was very early morning.)[b] They[c] did not go into the governor’s residence[d] so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal. 29 So Pilate came outside to them and said, “What accusation[e] do you bring against this man?”[f] 30 They replied,[g] “If this man[h] were not a criminal,[i] we would not have handed him over to you.”[j]
31 Pilate told them,[k] “Take him yourselves and pass judgment on him[l] according to your own law!”[m] The Jewish leaders[n] replied,[o] “We cannot legally put anyone to death.”[p] 32 (This happened[q] to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken when he indicated[r] what kind of death he was going to die.[s])
