Contemporary English Version (CEV)
Version
Psalm 119:129-136

129 Your teachings are wonderful,
    and I respect them all.
130 Understanding your word
brings light to the minds
    of ordinary people.
131 I honestly want to know
    everything you teach.
132 Think about me and be kind,
just as you are to everyone
    who loves your name.
133 Keep your promise
and don't let me stumble
or let sin control my life.
134 Protect me from abuse,
so I can obey your laws.
135 Smile on me, your servant,
    and teach me your laws.
136 When anyone disobeys you,
    my eyes overflow with tears.

1 Kings 2:1-4

David's Instructions to Solomon

Not long before David died, he told Solomon:

My son, I will soon die, as everyone must. But I want you to be strong and brave. Do what the Lord your God commands and follow his teachings. Obey everything written in the Law of Moses. Then you will be a success, no matter what you do or where you go. You and your descendants must always faithfully obey the Lord. If you do, he will keep the solemn promise he made to me that someone from our family will always be king of Israel.

Matthew 12:38-42

A Sign from Heaven

(Mark 8.11,12; Luke 11.29-32)

38 (A) Some Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a sign from heaven.”

39 (B) But Jesus replied:

You want a sign because you are evil and won't believe! But the only sign you will get is the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 (C) He was in the stomach of a big fish for three days and nights, just as the Son of Man will be deep in the earth for three days and nights. 41 (D) On the day of judgment the people of Nineveh[a] will stand there with you and condemn you. They turned to God when Jonah preached, and yet here is something far greater than Jonah. 42 (E) The Queen of the South[b] will also stand there with you and condemn you. She traveled a long way to hear Solomon's wisdom, and yet here is something much greater than Solomon.
