Psalm 92

(A psalm and a song for the Sabbath.)

Sing Praises to the Lord

It is wonderful to be grateful
and to sing your praises,
    Lord Most High!
It is wonderful each morning
    to tell about your love
and at night to announce
    how faithful you are.
I enjoy praising your name
    to the music of harps,
because everything you do
makes me happy,
    and I sing joyful songs.

You do great things, Lord.
    Your thoughts are too deep
(A) for an ignorant fool
    to know or understand.
Though the wicked sprout
    and spread like grass,
they will be pulled up
    by their roots.
But you will rule
    over all of us forever,
and your hateful enemies
will be scattered
    and then destroyed.

10 You have given me
the strength of a wild ox,
and you have chosen me
    to be your very own.
11 My eyes have seen,
    and my ears have heard
the doom and destruction
    of my evil enemies.

12 Good people will prosper
    like palm trees,
and they will grow strong
    like the cedars of Lebanon.
13 They will take root
in your house, Lord God,
    and they will do well.
14 They will be like trees
that stay healthy and fruitful,
    even when they are old.
15 And they will say about you,
“The Lord always does right!
    God is our mighty rock.”[a]

Deuteronomy 28:1-14

The Lord Will Bless You if You Obey

Moses said to Israel:

28 1-2 (A) Today I am giving you the laws and teachings of the Lord your God. Always obey them, and the Lord will make Israel the most famous and important nation on earth, and he will bless you in many ways.

The Lord will make your businesses and your farms successful.

You will have many children. You will harvest large crops, and your herds of cattle and flocks of sheep and goats will produce many young.

You will have plenty of bread[a] to eat.

The Lord will make you successful in your daily work.

The Lord will help you defeat your enemies and make them scatter in all directions.

The Lord your God is giving you the land, and he will make sure you are successful in everything you do. Your harvests will be so large that your storehouses will be full.

If you follow and obey the Lord, he will make you his own special people, just as he promised. 10 Then everyone on earth will know that you belong to the Lord, and they will be afraid of you.

11 The Lord will give you a lot of children and make sure that your animals give birth to many young. The Lord promised your ancestors that this land would be yours, and he will make it produce large crops for you.

12 The Lord will open the storehouses of the skies where he keeps the rain, and he will send rain on your land at just the right times. He will make you successful in everything you do. You will have plenty of money to lend to other nations, but you won't need to borrow any yourself.

13 Obey the laws and teachings that I'm giving you today, and the Lord your God will make Israel a leader among the nations, and not a follower. Israel will be wealthy and powerful, not poor and weak. 14 But you must not reject any of his laws and teachings or worship other gods.

Ephesians 4:17-5:2

The Old Life and the New Life

17 As a follower of the Lord, I order you to stop living like stupid, godless people. 18 Their minds are in the dark, and they are stubborn and ignorant and have missed out on the life that comes from God. They no longer have any feelings about what is right, 19 and they are so greedy they do all kinds of indecent things.

20-21 But this isn't what you were taught about Jesus Christ. He is the truth, and you heard about him and learned about him. 22 (A) You were told that your foolish desires will destroy you and that you must give up your old way of life with all its bad habits. 23 Let the Spirit change your way of thinking 24 (B) and make you into a new person. You were created to be like God, and so you must please him and be truly holy.

Rules for the New Life

25 (C) We are part of the same body. Stop lying and start telling each other the truth. 26 (D) Don't get so angry that you sin. Don't go to bed angry 27 and don't give the devil a chance.

28 If you are a thief, quit stealing. Be honest and work hard, so you will have something to give to people in need.

29 Stop all your dirty talk. Say the right thing at the right time and help others by what you say.

30 Don't make God's Spirit sad. The Spirit makes you sure that someday you will be free from your sins.

31 Stop being bitter and angry and mad at others. Don't yell at one another or curse each other or ever be rude. 32 (E) Instead, be kind and merciful, and forgive others, just as God forgave you because of Christ.

Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children. (F) Let love be your guide. Christ loved us[a] and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God.
