Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
11 when I put on sackcloth,(A)
people make sport of me.
12 Those who sit at the gate(B) mock me,
and I am the song of the drunkards.(C)
13 But I pray to you, Lord,
in the time of your favor;(D)
in your great love,(E) O God,
answer me with your sure salvation.
14 Rescue me from the mire,
do not let me sink;
deliver me from those who hate me,
from the deep waters.(F)
15 Do not let the floodwaters(G) engulf me
or the depths swallow me up(H)
or the pit close its mouth over me.(I)
12 But they will reply, ‘It’s no use.(A) We will continue with our own plans; we will all follow the stubbornness of our evil hearts.(B)’”
13 Therefore this is what the Lord says:
“Inquire among the nations:
Who has ever heard anything like this?(C)
A most horrible(D) thing has been done
by Virgin(E) Israel.
14 Does the snow of Lebanon
ever vanish from its rocky slopes?
Do its cool waters from distant sources
ever stop flowing?[a]
15 Yet my people have forgotten(F) me;
they burn incense(G) to worthless idols,(H)
which made them stumble(I) in their ways,
in the ancient paths.(J)
They made them walk in byways,
on roads not built up.(K)
16 Their land will be an object of horror(L)
and of lasting scorn;(M)
all who pass by will be appalled(N)
and will shake their heads.(O)
17 Like a wind(P) from the east,
I will scatter them before their enemies;
I will show them my back and not my face(Q)
in the day of their disaster.”
Jesus Made Fully Human
5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone(A) has testified:
“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
a son of man that you care for him?(B)
7 You made them a little[a] lower than the angels;
you crowned them with glory and honor
8 and put everything under their feet.”[b][c](C)
In putting everything under them,[d] God left nothing that is not subject to them.[e] Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.[f] 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor(D) because he suffered death,(E) so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.(F)
