Psalm 119:9-16

Beth

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By taking heed according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I have sought you;
do not let me stray from your commands.
11 In my heart I have hidden your word,[a]
so that I may not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Yahweh.
Teach me your statutes.
13 With my lips I have told of
all the ordinances of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I have rejoiced
as I would over all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts
and look at[b] your ways.
16 I will take delight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.

Deuteronomy 23:21-24:4

21 When you make a vow[a] to Yahweh your God, you shall not postpone fulfillment of it,[b] for certainly Yahweh your God shall require it from you and if postponed you will incur guilt.[c] 22 And if you refrain from vowing,[d] you shall not incur guilt.[e] 23 The utterance of your lips you must perform diligently[f] just as you have vowed freely to Yahweh your God whatever it was that you promised[g] with your mouth.

24 “When[h] you come into the vineyard of your neighbor, then you may eat grapes as you please[i] and until you are full,[j] but you shall not put any into your container.

25 “When[k] you come into the standing grain of your neighbor, then you may pluck ears with your hand, but you may not swing[l] a sickle among the standing grain of your neighbor.”

24 “When[m] a man takes a wife and he marries her and then[n] she does not please him,[o] because he found something objectionable[p] and writes her a letter of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her away from his house, and she goes from his house, and she goes out and becomes a wife for another man,[q] and then the second man dislikes her and he writes her a letter of divorce and places it into her hand and sends her from his house, or if the second man dies who took her to himself[r] as a wife, her first husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again[s] to become a wife to him after she has been defiled,[t] for that is a detestable thing before[u] Yahweh, and so you shall not mislead into sin the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance.

Deuteronomy 24:10-15

10 “When you make a loan to your neighbor, a loan of any kind, you shall not go into his house to take his pledge.[a] 11 You shall wait outside, and the man to whom you are lending, he shall bring the pledge outside to you. 12 And if he is a needy man, you shall not sleep in his pledge.[b] 13 You shall certainly return the pledge to him as the sun sets,[c] so that he may sleep in his cloak and may bless you, and it shall be considered righteousness on your behalf[d] before[e] Yahweh your God.

14 “You shall not exploit a hired worker, who is needy and poor, from among your fellow men or from among your aliens[f] who are in your land and in your towns.[g] 15 On his day you shall give his wage, and the sun shall not go down,[h] because he is poor and his life depends on it;[i] do this so that he does not cry out against you to Yahweh, and you incur guilt.[j]

James 2:1-13

Partiality Forbidden

My brothers, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with partiality. For if someone[a] enters into your assembly[b] in fine clothing with a gold ring on his finger, and a poor person in filthy clothing also enters, and you look favorably on the one wearing the fine clothing and you say, “Be seated here in a good place,” and to the poor person you say, “You stand or be seated there[c] by my footstool,” have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my dear brothers! Did not God choose the poor of the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor! Are not the rich exploiting you and they themselves dragging you into the courts? Do they themselves not blaspheme the good name of the one to whom you belong[d]?

However, if you carry out the royal law according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,”[e] you are doing well. But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and thus[f] are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles in one point only has become guilty of all of it. 11 For the one who said “Do not commit adultery”[g] also said “Do not murder.”[h] Now if you do not commit adultery but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 Thus speak and thus act as those who are going to be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is merciless to the one who has not practiced mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
