Good News Translation (GNT)
Version
Sirach 35:12-17

12 But don't try to bribe him or rely on offerings that you have obtained dishonestly. He will not accept them.

God's Justice

The Lord is fair[a] and does not show partiality. 13 He is not prejudiced against the poor; when someone prays who has been wronged, the Lord listens. 14 When orphans and widows pour out their prayers, he does not ignore them. 15 The tears running down a widow's cheek cry out in accusation against the one who has caused her distress.

16 Serve the Lord willingly, and the Lord will accept you; your prayers will reach the skies. 17 The prayer of a humble person goes past the clouds and keeps on going until it reaches the Lord Most High, where it stays until he answers by seeing that justice is done and that the guilty are punished.

Jeremiah 14:7-10

My people cry out to me,
    ‘Even though our sins accuse us,
    help us, Lord, as you have promised.
We have turned away from you many times;
    we have sinned against you.
You are Israel's only hope;
    you are the one who saves us from disaster.
Why are you like a stranger in our land,
    like a traveler who stays for only one night?
Why are you like someone taken by surprise,
    like a soldier powerless to help?
Surely, Lord, you are with us!
    We are your people;
    do not abandon us.’”

10 The Lord says about these people, “They love to run away from me, and they will not control themselves. So I am not pleased with them. I will remember the wrongs they have done and punish them because of their sins.”

Jeremiah 14:19-22

The People Plead with the Lord

19 Lord, have you completely rejected Judah?
    Do you hate the people of Zion?
Why have you hurt us so badly
    that we cannot be healed?
We looked for peace, but nothing good happened;
    we hoped for healing, but terror came instead.
20 We have sinned against you, Lord;
    we confess our own sins
    and the sins of our ancestors.
21 Remember your promises and do not despise us;
    do not bring disgrace on Jerusalem,
    the place of your glorious throne.
Do not break the covenant you made with us.
22 None of the idols of the nations can send rain;
    the sky by itself cannot make showers fall.
We have put our hope in you, O Lord our God,
    because you are the one who does these things.

Psalm 84:1-7

Longing for God's House[a]

84 How I love your Temple, Lord Almighty!
    How I want to be there!
    I long to be in the Lord's Temple.
With my whole being I sing for joy
    to the living God.
Even the sparrows have built a nest,
    and the swallows have their own home;
they keep their young near your altars,
    Lord Almighty, my king and my God.
How happy are those who live in your Temple,
    always singing praise to you.

How happy are those whose strength comes from you,
    who are eager to make the pilgrimage to Mount Zion.
As they pass through the dry valley of Baca,
    it becomes a place of springs;
    the autumn rain fills it with pools.
They grow stronger as they go;
    they will see the God of gods on Zion.

2 Timothy 4:6-8

As for me, the hour has come for me to be sacrificed; the time is here for me to leave this life. I have done my best in the race, I have run the full distance, and I have kept the faith.[a] And now there is waiting for me the victory prize of being put right with God, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that Day—and not only to me, but to all those who wait with love for him to appear.

2 Timothy 4:16-18

16 No one stood by me the first time I defended myself; all deserted me. May God not count it against them! 17 But the Lord stayed with me and gave me strength, so that I was able to proclaim the full message for all the Gentiles to hear; and I was rescued from being sentenced to death. 18 And the Lord will rescue me from all evil and take me safely into his heavenly Kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever! Amen.

Luke 18:9-14

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Jesus also told this parable to people who were sure of their own goodness and despised everybody else. 10 “Once there were two men who went up to the Temple to pray: one was a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood apart by himself and prayed,[a] ‘I thank you, God, that I am not greedy, dishonest, or an adulterer, like everybody else. I thank you that I am not like that tax collector over there. 12 I fast two days a week, and I give you one tenth of all my income.’ 13 (A)But the tax collector stood at a distance and would not even raise his face to heaven, but beat on his breast and said, ‘God, have pity on me, a sinner!’ 14 (B)I tell you,” said Jesus, “the tax collector, and not the Pharisee, was in the right with God when he went home. For those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great.”
