Psalm 57

Prayer for Rescue from Enemies

For the music director, according to Do Not Destroy.

Of David. A miktam.

When he fled from Saul into the cave.[a]

57 Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me,
because in you my soul takes refuge.
In the shadow of your wings I will take refuge
until destruction passes by.
I will call to God Most High,
to God who accomplishes things concerning me.
He will send from heaven and save me;
he will reproach the one who tramples me. Selah
God will send his loyal love and his faithfulness.
My soul is among lions.
I lie down among those who devour—
the children[b] of humankind whose teeth are spears and arrows
and whose tongues are sharp swords.
Be exalted above the heavens, O God.
Let your glory be above all the earth.
They have set a net for my steps;
my soul is bowed down.
They have dug a pit before me;
they have fallen into the midst of it. Selah
My heart is steadfast, O God;
My heart is steadfast.
I will sing and give praise.
Awake, my glory;
Awake, harp and lyre.
I will awake the dawn.[c]
I will give you thanks among the peoples, O Lord;
I will give you praise among the nations.
10 Because your loyal love is high to the heavens,
and your faithfulness to the clouds.
11 Be exalted above the heavens, O God.
Let your glory be above all the earth.

1 Samuel 25:36-42

36 Then Abigail went to Nabal, and look, he was holding a feast[a] in his house like the feast of the king. Nabal was enjoying himself,[b] and he was very drunk, so she did not tell him a thing, nothing at all,[c] until the light of morning. 37 And then[d] in the morning when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these words. Then his heart died within him,[e] and he became like a stone. 38 And then,[f] about ten days later, Yahweh struck Nabal and he died.

39 When David heard that Nabal had died, he said, “Blessed be Yahweh who has vindicated the case of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and he has kept back his servant from evil; but Yahweh has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent and spoke with Abigail to take her for his wife. 40 So the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, and they spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you to take you for his wife.” 41 She got up and bowed down with her face to the ground and said, “Here is your female servant, as a slave to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.” 42 Then Abigail quickly got up[g] and rode on the donkey, along with five of her maidservants who attended her,[h] and she went after the messengers of David and became his wife.

Luke 22:39-46

The Prayer in Gethsemane

39 And he went away and[a] proceeded, according to his[b] custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him. 40 And when[c] he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw and knelt down[d] and[e] began to pray,[f] 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, take away this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done.” [[43 And an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 44 And being in anguish, he began praying[g] more fervently and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down to the ground.]][h] 45 And when he[i] got up from the prayer and[j] came to the disciples, he found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and[k] pray that you will not enter into temptation!”
