Psalm 37:1-9

The Heritage of the Righteous and the Calamity of the Wicked

A Psalm of David.

37 Do(A) not fret because of evildoers,
Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
For they shall soon be cut down (B)like the grass,
And wither as the green herb.

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
(C)Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your (D)heart.

(E)Commit[a] your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.
(F)He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,
And your justice as the noonday.

Rest in the Lord, (G)and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who (H)prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
(I)Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
(J)Do not fret—it only causes harm.

For evildoers shall be [b]cut off;
But those who wait on the Lord,
They shall (K)inherit the earth.

2 Kings 18:1-8

Hezekiah Reigns in Judah(A)

18 Now it came to pass in the third year of (B)Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that (C)Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was (D)Abi[a] the daughter of Zechariah. And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done.

(E)He removed the [b]high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the [c]wooden image and broke in pieces the (F)bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it [d]Nehushtan. He (G)trusted in the Lord God of Israel, (H)so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him. For he (I)held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses. The Lord (J)was with him; he (K)prospered wherever he went. And he (L)rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. (M)He [e]subdued the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory, (N)from watchtower to fortified city.

2 Kings 18:28-36

28 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in [a]Hebrew, and spoke, saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! 29 Thus says the king: (A)‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you from his hand; 30 nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” ’ 31 Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: ‘Make peace with me [b]by a present and come out to me; and every one of you eat from his own (B)vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern; 32 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, (C)a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive groves and honey, that you may live and not die. But do not listen to Hezekiah, lest he persuade you, saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” 33 (D)Has any of the gods of the nations at all delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 34 Where are the gods of (E)Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim and Hena and (F)Ivah? Indeed, have they delivered Samaria from my hand? 35 Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, (G)that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’ ”

36 But the people held their peace and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Do not answer him.”

Revelation 2:8-11

The Persecuted Church

“And to the [a]angel of the church in Smyrna write,

‘These things says (A)the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are (B)rich); and I know the blasphemy of (C)those who say they are Jews and are not, (D)but are a [b]synagogue of Satan. 10 (E)Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. (F)Be faithful until death, and I will give you (G)the crown of life.

11 (H)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by (I)the second death.” ’
