Psalm 37:23-40

23 A person’s steps are established by the Lord,
and he takes pleasure in his way.(A)
24 Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed,
because the Lord supports him with his hand.(B)

25 I have been young and now I am old,
yet I have not seen the righteous abandoned
or his children begging for bread.(C)
26 He is always generous, always lending,
and his children are a blessing.(D)

27 Turn away from evil, do what is good,
and settle permanently.(E)
28 For the Lord loves justice
and will not abandon his faithful ones.(F)
They are kept safe forever,
but the children of the wicked will be destroyed.(G)
29 The righteous will inherit the land
and dwell in it permanently.(H)

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom;
his tongue speaks what is just.(I)
31 The instruction of his God is in his heart;
his steps do not falter.(J)

32 The wicked one lies in wait for the righteous
and intends to kill him;(K)
33 the Lord will not leave him
in the power of the wicked one
or allow him to be condemned when he is judged.(L)

34 Wait for the Lord and keep his way,
and he will exalt you to inherit the land.
You will watch when the wicked are destroyed.(M)

35 I have seen a wicked, violent person
well-rooted,[a] like a flourishing native tree.(N)
36 Then I[b] passed by and noticed he was gone;
I searched for him, but he could not be found.(O)

37 Watch the blameless and observe the upright,
for the person of peace will have a future.[c](P)
38 But transgressors will all be eliminated;
the future of the wicked will be destroyed.(Q)

39 The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord,
their refuge in a time of distress.(R)
40 The Lord helps and delivers them;
he will deliver them from the wicked and will save them
because they take refuge in him.(S)

1 Samuel 8:1-18

Israel’s Demand for a King

When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel.(A) His firstborn son’s name was Joel and his second was Abijah. They were judges in Beer-sheba.(B) However, his sons did not walk in his ways—they turned toward dishonest profit, took bribes, and perverted justice.(C)

So all the elders of Israel gathered together and went to Samuel at Ramah.(D) They said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have.”(E)

When they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” Samuel considered their demand wrong, so he prayed to the Lord. But the Lord told him, “Listen to the people and everything they say to you. They have not rejected you; they have rejected me as their king.(F) They are doing the same thing to you that they have done to me,[a] since the day I brought them out of Egypt until this day, abandoning me and worshiping other gods. Listen to them, but solemnly warn them(G) and tell them about the customary rights of the king who will reign over them.”

10 Samuel told all the Lord’s words to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “These are the rights of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and put them to his use in his chariots, on his horses, or running in front of his chariots. 12 He can appoint them for his use as commanders of thousands or commanders of fifties,(H) to plow his ground and reap his harvest, or to make his weapons of war and the equipment for his chariots. 13 He can take your daughters to become perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 He can take your best fields, vineyards, and olive orchards and give them to his servants.(I) 15 He can take a tenth of your grain and your vineyards and give them to his officials and servants. 16 He can take your male servants, your female servants, your best cattle,[b] and your donkeys and use them for his work. 17 He can take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves can become his servants. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out because of the king you’ve chosen for yourselves,(J) but the Lord won’t answer you on that day.”(K)

Hebrews 6:1-12

Warning against Falling Away

Therefore, let us leave the elementary teaching about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, faith in God,(A) teaching about ritual washings,[a] laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.(B) And we will do this if God permits.

For it is impossible to renew to repentance those who were once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift, who shared in the Holy Spirit,(C) who tasted God’s good word and the powers of the coming age, and who have fallen away. This is because,[b] to their own harm, they are recrucifying the Son of God and holding him up to contempt.(D) For the ground that drinks the rain that often falls on it and that produces vegetation useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and about to be cursed, and at the end will be burned.(E)

Even though we are speaking this way, dearly loved friends, in your case we are confident of things that are better and that pertain to salvation. 10 For God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love[c] you demonstrated for his name by serving the saints—and by continuing to serve them.(F) 11 Now we desire each of you to demonstrate the same diligence for the full assurance of your hope until the end, 12 so that you won’t become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance.(G)
