Psalm 107:1-3

BOOK FIVE(A)

In Praise of God's Goodness

107 (B)“Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good;
    his love is eternal!”
Repeat these words in praise to the Lord,
    all you whom he has saved.
He has rescued you from your enemies
    and has brought you back from foreign countries,
    from east and west, from north and south.[a]

Psalm 107:33-43

33 The Lord made rivers dry up completely
    and stopped springs from flowing.
34 (A)He made rich soil become a salty wasteland
    because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
35 He changed deserts into pools of water
    and dry land into flowing springs.
36 He let hungry people settle there,
    and they built a city to live in.
37 They sowed the fields and planted grapevines
    and reaped an abundant harvest.
38 He blessed his people, and they had many children;
    he kept their herds of cattle from decreasing.

39 When God's people were defeated and humiliated
    by cruel oppression and suffering,
40 he showed contempt for their oppressors
    and made them wander in trackless deserts.
41 But he rescued the needy from their misery
    and made their families increase like flocks.
42 The righteous see this and are glad,
    but all the wicked are put to silence.

43 May those who are wise think about these things;
    may they consider the Lord's constant love.

Isaiah 55:1-9

God's Offer of Mercy

55 (A)The Lord says,

“Come, everyone who is thirsty—
    here is water!
Come, you that have no money—
    buy grain and eat!
Come! Buy wine and milk—
    it will cost you nothing!
(B)Why spend money on what does not satisfy?
    Why spend your wages and still be hungry?
Listen to me and do what I say,
    and you will enjoy the best food of all.

(C)“Listen now, my people, and come to me;
    come to me, and you will have life!
I will make a lasting covenant with you
    and give you the blessings I promised to David.
I made him a leader and commander of nations,
    and through him I showed them my power.
Now you will summon foreign nations;
    at one time they did not know you,
    but now they will come running to join you!
I, the Lord your God, the holy God of Israel,
    will make all this happen;
    I will give you honor and glory.”

Turn to the Lord and pray to him,
    now that he is near.
Let the wicked leave their way of life
    and change their way of thinking.
Let them turn to the Lord, our God;
    he is merciful and quick to forgive.
“My thoughts,” says the Lord, “are not like yours,
    and my ways are different from yours.
As high as the heavens are above the earth,
    so high are my ways and thoughts above yours.

Mark 8:1-10

Jesus Feeds Four Thousand People(A)

Not long afterward another large crowd came together. When the people had nothing left to eat, Jesus called the disciples to him and said, “I feel sorry for these people, because they have been with me for three days and now have nothing to eat. If I send them home without feeding them, they will faint as they go, because some of them have come a long way.”

His disciples asked him, “Where in this desert can anyone find enough food to feed all these people?”

“How much bread do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven loaves,” they answered.

He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves, gave thanks to God, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the crowd; and the disciples did so. They also had a few small fish. Jesus gave thanks for these and told the disciples to distribute them too. 8-9 Everybody ate and had enough—there were about four thousand people. Then the disciples took up seven baskets full of pieces left over. Jesus sent the people away 10 and at once got into a boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.
