Psalm 30

Psalm 30

Joy in the Morning

A psalm; a dedication song for the house. Of David.

I will exalt you, Lord,
because you have lifted me up(A)
and have not allowed my enemies
to triumph over me.(B)
Lord my God,
I cried to you for help, and you healed me.(C)
Lord, you brought me up from Sheol;(D)
you spared me from among those
going down[a] to the Pit.(E)

Sing to the Lord, you his faithful ones,
and praise his holy name.(F)
For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor, a lifetime.
Weeping may stay overnight,
but there is joy in the morning.(G)

When I was secure, I said,
“I will never be shaken.”(H)
Lord, when you showed your favor,
you made me stand like a strong mountain;(I)
when you hid your face, I was terrified.(J)
Lord, I called to you;
I sought favor from my Lord:(K)
“What gain is there in my death,
if I go down to the Pit?
Will the dust praise you?
Will it proclaim your truth?(L)
10 Lord, listen and be gracious to me;
Lord, be my helper.”(M)

11 You turned my lament into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth
and clothed me with gladness,(N)
12 so that I can sing to you and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will praise you forever.(O)

Lamentations 1:16-22

ע Ayin

16 I weep because of these things;
my eyes flow[a] with tears.(A)
For there is no one nearby to comfort me,(B)
no one to keep me alive.
My children are desolate
because the enemy has prevailed.

פ Pe

17 Zion stretches out her hands;
there is no one to comfort her.
The Lord has issued a decree against Jacob
that his neighbors should be his adversaries.
Jerusalem has become
something impure(C) among them.

צ Tsade

18 The Lord is just,
for I have rebelled against his command.(D)
Listen, all you people;
look at my pain.
My young women and young men
have gone into captivity.(E)

ק Qoph

19 I called to my lovers,(F)
but they betrayed me.
My priests and elders
perished in the city
while searching for food
to keep themselves alive.(G)

ר Resh

20 Lord, see how I am in distress.
I am churning within;(H)
my heart is broken,[b]
for I have been very rebellious.
Outside, the sword takes the children;
inside, there is death.(I)

שׁ Shin

21 People have heard me groaning,(J)
but there is no one to comfort me.
All my enemies have heard of my misfortune;
they are glad that you have caused it.(K)
Bring on the day you have announced,
so that they may become like me.(L)

ת Taw

22 Let all their wickedness come before you,
and deal with them
as you have dealt with me
because of all my transgressions.(M)
For my groans are many,
and I am sick at heart.

2 Corinthians 7:2-16

Joy and Repentance

Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, corrupted(A) no one, taken advantage of no one. I don’t say this to condemn you, since I have already said that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. I am very frank with you; I have great pride in you. I am filled with encouragement; I am overflowing with joy in all our afflictions.

In fact, when we came into Macedonia,(B) we[a] had no rest. Instead, we were troubled in every way: conflicts(C) on the outside, fears(D) within. But God, who comforts the downcast,(E) comforted us by the arrival of Titus, and not only by his arrival but also by the comfort he received from you. He told us about your deep longing, your sorrow, and your zeal(F) for me, so that I rejoiced even more. For even if I grieved you with my letter,(G) I don’t regret it. And if I regretted it—since I saw that the letter grieved you, yet only for a while— I now rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led to repentance. For you were grieved as God willed, so that you didn’t experience any loss from us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, but worldly grief produces death.(H) 11 For consider how much diligence this very thing—this grieving as God wills—has produced in you: what a desire to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what deep longing, what zeal, what justice! In every way you showed yourselves to be pure(I) in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you, it was not because of the one who did wrong, or because of the one who was wronged, but in order that your devotion to us might be made plain to you in the sight of God. 13 For this reason we have been comforted.

In addition to our own comfort, we rejoiced even more over the joy Titus(J) had, because his spirit was refreshed by all of you. 14 For if I have made any boast to him about you, I have not been disappointed; but as I have spoken everything to you in truth,(K) so our boasting to Titus has also turned out to be the truth. 15 And his affection toward you is even greater as he remembers the obedience of all of you, and how you received him with fear and trembling. 16 I rejoice that I have complete confidence in you.
