Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
23 Others went to sea in ships,
conducting trade on the vast water.(A)
24 They saw the Lord’s works,
his wondrous works in the deep.(B)
25 He spoke and raised a stormy wind
that stirred up the waves of the sea.[a](C)
26 Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths,
their courage[b] melting away in anguish,(D)
27 they reeled and staggered like a drunkard,
and all their skill was useless.(E)
28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
and he brought them out of their distress.(F)
29 He stilled the storm to a whisper,
and the waves of the sea were hushed.(G)
30 They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet.
Then he guided them to the harbor they longed for.(H)
31 Let them give thanks to the Lord
for his faithful love
and his wondrous works for all humanity.(I)
32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people
and praise him in the council of the elders.(J)
21 Men listened to me with expectation,
waiting silently for my advice.
22 After a word from me they did not speak again;
my speech settled on them like dew.(A)
23 They waited for me as for the rain
and opened their mouths as for spring showers.
24 If I smiled at them, they couldn’t believe it;
they were thrilled at[a] the light of my countenance.
25 I directed their course and presided as chief.
I lived as a king among his troops,
like one who comforts those who mourn.
30 But now they mock(B) me,
men younger than I am,
whose fathers I would have refused to put
with my sheep dogs.
2 What use to me was the strength of their hands?
Their vigor had left them.
3 Emaciated from poverty and hunger,
they gnawed the dry land,
the desolate wasteland by night.
4 They plucked mallow[b](C) among the shrubs,
and the roots of the broom tree were their food.
5 They were banished from human society;
people shouted at them as if they were thieves.
6 They are living on the slopes of the wadis,
among the rocks and in holes in the ground.
7 They bray among the shrubs;
they huddle beneath the thistles.
8 Foolish(D) men, without even a name.
They were forced to leave the land.
9 Now I am mocked by their songs;(E)
I have become an object of scorn to them.
10 They despise me and keep their distance from me;(F)
they do not hesitate to spit(G) in my face.
11 Because God has loosened my[c] bowstring and oppressed me,
they have cast off restraint in my presence.(H)
12 The rabble[d] rise up at my right;
they trap[e] my feet
and construct their siege ramp[f] against me.(I)
13 They tear up my path;
they contribute to my destruction,(J)
without anyone to help them.
14 They advance as through a gaping breach;
they keep rolling in through the ruins.(K)
15 Terrors(L) are turned loose against me;
they chase my dignity away like the wind,
and my prosperity has passed by like a cloud.
Warnings on the Journey to Jerusalem
21 After(A) we tore ourselves away from them, we set sail straight for Cos, the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara. 2 Finding a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, we boarded and set sail. 3 After we sighted Cyprus, passing to the south of it,[a] we sailed on to Syria and arrived at Tyre, since the ship was to unload its cargo there. 4 We sought out the disciples and stayed there seven days. Through the Spirit they told Paul not to go to Jerusalem.(B) 5 When our time had come to an end, we left to continue our journey, while all of them, with their wives and children, accompanied us out of the city. After kneeling down on the beach to pray, 6 we said farewell to one another and boarded the ship, and they returned home.
7 When we completed our voyage[b] from Tyre, we reached Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and stayed with them for a day.(C) 8 The next day we left and came to Caesarea, where we entered the house of Philip(D) the evangelist,(E) who was one of the Seven, and stayed with him. 9 This man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.(F)
10 After we had been there for several days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 He came to us, took Paul’s belt, tied his own feet and hands, and said, “This is what the Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him over to the Gentiles.’”(G) 12 When we heard this, both we and the local people pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem.
13 Then Paul replied, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”(H)
14 Since he would not be persuaded, we said no more except, “The Lord’s will be done.”(I)
Conflict over the Gentile Mission
15 After this we got ready and went up to Jerusalem. 16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us and brought us to Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we were to stay.(J)
