Psalm 131

A Childlike Spirit

A Davidic song of ascents.

Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.(A)
I do not get involved with things
too great or too difficult for me.(B)
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself
like a little weaned child with its mother;
I am like a little child.(C)

Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
both now and forever.(D)

Jeremiah 28:10-17

Hananiah Breaks Jeremiah’s Yoke

10 The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke bar from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it.(A) 11 In the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed, “This is what the Lord says: ‘In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’” Jeremiah the prophet then went on his way.

The Lord’s Word against Hananiah

12 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke bar from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet: 13 “Go say to Hananiah: This is what the Lord says, ‘You broke a wooden yoke bar, but in its place you will make an iron yoke bar.’ 14 For this is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says, ‘I have put an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations that they might serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon,(B) and they will serve him.(C) I have also put the wild animals under him.’”(D)

15 The prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord did not send you, but you have led these people to trust in a lie.(E) 16 Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to send you off the face of the earth. You will die this year because you have spoken rebellion against the Lord.’”(F) 17 And the prophet Hananiah died that year in the seventh month.

Romans 3:1-8

Paul Answers an Objection

So what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Considerable in every way. First, they were entrusted(A) with the spoken words of God.(B) What then? If some did not believe,(C) will their unbelief cancel God’s faithfulness? Absolutely not!(D) God must be true, even if everyone is a liar,(E) as it is written:

That You may be justified in Your words
and triumph when You judge.(F)[a]

But if our unrighteousness highlights[b] God’s righteousness,(G) what are we to say?(H) I use a human argument:[c](I) Is God unrighteous to inflict wrath? Absolutely not! Otherwise, how will God judge the world?(J) But if by my lie God’s truth is amplified to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?(K) And why not say, just as some people slanderously claim we say, “Let us do what is evil so that good may come”?(L) Their condemnation is deserved!
