Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
52 1 David describeth the arrogant tyranny of his adversary Doeg: who by false surmises cause Ahimelech with the rest of the Priests to be slain. 5 David prophesieth his destruction, 6 and encourageth the faithful to put their confidence in God, whose judgments are most sharp against his adversaries. 9 And finally, he rendereth thanks to God for his deliverance. In this Psalm is timely set forth the kingdom of Antichrist.
To him that excelleth. A Psalm of David to give instruction. When Doeg the Edomite came and showed Saul, and said to him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.
1 Why boastest thou thyself in thy wickedness, O [a]man of power? the loving-kindness of God endureth daily.
2 Thy tongue imagineth [b]mischief, and is like a sharp razor, that cutteth deceitfully.
3 Thou dost love evil more than good, and lies more than to speak the [c]truth. Selah.
4 Thou lovest all words that may destroy: O deceitful tongue!
5 So shall God [d]destroy thee forever: he shall take thee and pluck thee out of thy tabernacle, and [e]root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.
6 The [f]righteous also shall see it, [g]and fear, and shall laugh at him, saying,
7 Behold the man that took not God for his strength, but trusteth unto the multitude of his riches, and put his strength [h]in his malice.
8 But I shall be like a [i]green olive tree in the house of God: for I trusted in the mercy of God forever and ever.
9 I will always praise thee, for that thou hast done [j]this, and I will [k]hope in thy name, because it is good before thy Saints.
24 2 Joshua rehearseth God’s benefits, 14 and exhorteth the people to fear God. 25 The league renewed between God and the people. 29 Joshua dieth. 32 The bones of Joseph are buried. 33 Eleazar dieth.
1 And Joshua assembled again all the [a]tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called the Elders of Israel, and their heads, and their Judges, and their officers, and they presented themselves before [b]God.
2 Then Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, (A)Your fathers dwelt beyond the [c]flood in old time, even Terah the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor, and served other gods.
11 And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho, and the [a]men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, and I delivered them into your hand.
12 And I sent (A)hornets before you, which cast them out before you, even the two kings of the Amorites, and not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
13 And I have given you a land, wherein ye did not labor, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them, and eat of the vineyards and olive trees, which ye planted not.
14 Now therefore [b]fear the Lord, and serve him in uprightness and in truth, and put away the gods, which your fathers served beyond the flood, and in Egypt, and serve ye the Lord.
15 And [c]if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served (that were beyond the flood) or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: [d]but I and mine house will serve the Lord.
16 Then the people answered and said, God forbid, that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods.
17 For the Lord our God, he brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and he did those great miracles in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the people through whom we came.
18 And the Lord did cast out before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the Lord, [e]for he is our God.
19 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the Lord: for he is an holy God: he is a jealous God: he will not pardon your iniquity nor your sins.
20 If ye forsake the Lord and serve strange gods, (B)then he will return and bring evil upon you, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.
21 And the people said unto Joshua, Nay, but we will serve the Lord.
22 And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses [f]against yourselves, that ye have chosen you the Lord, to serve him: and they said, We are witnesses.
23 Then put away now, said he, the strange [g]gods which are among you, and bow your hearts unto the Lord God of Israel.
24 And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
25 So Joshua [h]made a covenant with the people the same day, and gave them an ordinance and law in Shechem.
26 And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the Law of God and took a great stone, and pitched it there under an [i]oak that was in the Sanctuary of the Lord.
27 And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us: for it [j]hath heard all the words of the Lord which he spake with us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest you deny your God.
28 Then Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
9 [a]What then? are we more excellent? No, in no wise: for we have already proved, that all, both Jews and Gentiles are [b]under sin,
10 As it is written, (A)There is none righteous no not one.
11 There is none that understandeth: there is none that seeketh God.
12 They have all gone out of the way: they have been made altogether unprofitable: there is none that doeth good, no not one.
13 (B)Their throat is an open sepulcher: they have used their tongues to deceit: (C)the poison of asps is under their lips.
14 (D)Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.
15 (E)Their feet are swift to shed blood.
16 Destruction and calamity are in their ways:
17 And the [c]way of peace they have not known.
18 (F)The fear of God is not before their eyes.
19 [d]Now we know that whatsoever the [e]law saith, it saith it to them which are under the law, that [f]every mouth may be stopped, and all the world be [g]subject to the judgment of God.
20 Therefore by the [h]works of the Law shall no [i]flesh be [j]justified in his [k]sight: for by the Law cometh the knowledge of sin.
21 [l]But now is the righteousness of God made manifest without the Law, having witness of the Law, and of the Prophets,
22 [m]To wit, the righteousness of God by the faith of [n]Jesus Christ, unto all, and upon all that believe.
