Psalm 52

Judgment on the Deceitful

To the leader. A Maskil of David, when Doeg the Edomite came to Saul and said to him, “David has come to the house of Ahimelech.”

Why do you boast, O mighty one,
    of mischief done against the godly?[a]
All day long(A)     you are plotting destruction.
Your tongue is like a sharp razor,
    you worker of treachery.(B)
You love evil more than good
    and lying more than speaking the truth. Selah(C)
You love all words that devour,
    O deceitful tongue.(D)

But God will break you down forever;
    he will snatch and tear you from your tent;
    he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah(E)
The righteous will see and fear
    and will laugh at the evildoer,[b] saying,(F)
“See the one who would not take
    refuge in God
but trusted in abundant riches
    and sought refuge in wealth!”[c](G)

But I am like a green olive tree
    in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
    forever and ever.(H)
I will thank you forever
    because of what you have done.
In the presence of the faithful
    I will proclaim[d] your name, for it is good.(I)

Joshua 8:30-35

Joshua Renews the Covenant

30 [a]Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel,(A) 31 just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the Israelites, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, “an altar of unhewn[b] stones, on which no iron tool has been used,” and they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord and sacrificed offerings of well-being.(B) 32 And there, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua[c] wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses that he had written.(C) 33 All Israel, alien as well as native-born, with their elders and officers and their judges, stood on opposite sides of the ark in front of the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded earlier, that they should bless the people of Israel.(D) 34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, blessings and curses, according to all that is written in the book of the law.(E) 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded that Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the little ones, and the aliens who resided among them.(F)

Romans 2:1-11

The Righteous Judgment of God

Therefore you are without excuse, whoever you are, when you judge others, for in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, are doing the very same things.(A) We know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is in accordance with truth. Do you imagine, whoever you are, that when you judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself, you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not realize that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?(B) But by your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.(C) He will repay according to each one’s deeds:(D) to those who by patiently doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life, while for those who are self-seeking and who obey not the truth but injustice, there will be wrath and fury.(E) There will be affliction and distress for everyone who does evil, both the Jew first and the Greek,(F) 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, both the Jew first and the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.(G)
