Psalm 41

Thanksgiving for God’s Provision in Time of Sickness

For the music director. A psalm of David.[a]

41 Blessed is the one who has regard for the poor;
in the day of disaster, Yahweh delivers him.
Yahweh protects him and keeps him alive;
he is blessed in the land,
and you do not give him
into the will[b] of his enemies.
Yahweh sustains him on his sick bed.
In his illness, you restore to health.[c]
As for me, I said, “O Yahweh, be gracious to me.
Heal me,[d] for I have sinned against you.”
My enemies speak evil about me,
“When will he die and his name perish?”
And when one comes to see me, he speaks falsely;
his heart gathers disaster for itself.
He goes out to the street; he speaks.
All who hate me speak together against me.
Against me they assume the worst[e] for me:
“A ruinous thing is poured out on him,
and now that he lies down, he will not rise up again.”
Even my close friend,[f] whom I trusted,
who ate my bread,
has lifted his heel against me.
10 But you, O Yahweh, be gracious to me and raise me up
that I may repay them.
11 By this I know that you delight in me:
because my enemy has not shouted in triumph over me.
12 As for me, you have upheld me in my integrity,
and you have set me in your presence forever.
13 Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.

Isaiah 39

The Delegation from Babylon

39 At that time, Merodach-Baladan, son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah, for[a] he heard that he had been sick and recovered. And Hezekiah rejoiced over them and showed them his house of aromatic gum, the silver, gold, spices, good oil, all the house of his weapons, and all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing that Hezekiah had not shown them in his house or in all his dominion. And Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and said to him, “What did these men say, and from where did they come to you?” And Hezekiah answered,[b] “They came to me from a distant country, from Babylon.” And he[c] said, “What have they seen in your house?” And Hezekiah answered,[d] “They have seen all that is in my house. There is nothing that I have not shown them in my storehouses.”

And Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of Yahweh of hosts: ‘Look! days are coming, and all that is in your house and that which your ancestors[e] have stored up to this day shall be carried off to Babylon. Nothing shall be left,’ says Yahweh. ‘And some of your sons who go out from you, whom you fathered, shall be taken, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’” And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of Yahweh that you have spoken is good,” for[f] he thought,[g] “Surely there will be peace and security in my days.”

Luke 4:38-41

38 And after he[a] set out from the synagogue, he went into Simon’s house. And Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a high fever, and they asked him on behalf of her. 39 And he stood over her and[b] rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she got up and[c] began to serve[d] them.

40 Now as[e] the sun was setting, all who had those who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and placing his[f] hands on every one of them, he healed them. 41 And demons also were coming out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God!” And he rebuked them[g] and did not permit them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.[h]
