Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
8 I will hear what God, Yahweh, will speak,
because he will speak peace
to his people, even his faithful ones,[a]
but let them not return to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is near for those who fear him,
that glory may abide in our land.
10 Loyal love and faithfulness[b] will meet one another;
righteousness and peace will kiss.
11 Faithfulness[c] will sprout from the ground,
and righteousness will look down from heaven.
12 Yes, Yahweh will give what is good,
and our land will give its produce.
13 Righteousness will go before him,
and it will make his steps a pathway.
24 “‘And I will take you from the nations, and I will gather you from all of the lands, and I will bring you to your land. 25 And I will sprinkle on you pure water, and you will be clean from all of your uncleanness, and I will cleanse you from all of your idols. 26 And I will give a new heart to you, and a new spirit I will give[a] into your inner parts, and I will remove the[b] heart of stone from your flesh, and I will give to you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will give[c] my spirit into your inner parts, and I will make it so that you will go[d] in my rules, and my regulations you will remember, and you will do them. 28 And you will dwell in the land that I gave to your ancestors,[e] and you will be to me as a people, and I will be to you as[f] God.
Jesus’ Authority Challenged
27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as[a] he was walking in the temple courts,[b] the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came up to him 28 and said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority that you do these things?” 29 So Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Answer me and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer me!” 31 And they began to discuss[c] this[d] with one another, saying, “What should we say?[e] If we say ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From men’”—they were afraid of the crowd, because they all looked upon John as truly a prophet.[f] 33 And they replied to Jesus saying, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
