Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
The Lord Implored to Defend the Psalmist against the Wicked.
A [a]Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the Lord [b]concerning Cush, a Benjamite.
7 O Lord my God, (A)in You I have taken refuge;
Save me from all those who pursue me, and (B)deliver me,
2 Or he will tear [c]my soul (C)like a lion,
[d]Dragging me away, while there is none to deliver.
3 O Lord my God, if I have done this,
If there is (D)injustice in my hands,
4 If I have (E)rewarded evil to [e]my friend,
Or have (F)plundered [f]him who without cause was my adversary,
5 Let the enemy pursue [g]my soul and overtake [h]it;
And let him trample my life down to the ground
And lay my glory in the dust. [i]Selah.
6 (G)Arise, O Lord, in Your anger;
(H)Lift up Yourself against (I)the rage of my adversaries,
And (J)arouse Yourself [j]for me; You have appointed judgment.
7 Let the assembly of the (K)peoples encompass You,
And over [k]them return on high.
8 The Lord (L)judges the peoples;
[l](M)Vindicate me, O Lord, according to my righteousness and my integrity that is in me.
9 O let (N)the evil of the wicked come to an end, but (O)establish the righteous;
For the righteous God (P)tries the hearts and [m]minds.
10 My (Q)shield is [n]with God,
Who (R)saves the upright in heart.
11 God is a (S)righteous judge,
And a God who has (T)indignation every day.
12 If [o]a man (U)does not repent, He will (V)sharpen His sword;
He has (W)bent His bow and [p]made it ready.
13 He has also prepared [q]for Himself deadly weapons;
He makes His (X)arrows fiery shafts.
14 Behold, he travails with wickedness,
And he (Y)conceives mischief and brings forth falsehood.
15 He has dug a pit and hollowed it out,
And has (Z)fallen into the hole which he made.
16 His (AA)mischief will return upon his own head,
And his (AB)violence will descend upon [r]his own pate.
7 “Now as for you, son of man, I have [a](A)appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a [b]message from My mouth and give them (B)warning from Me. 8 When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will (C)surely die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require from your hand. 9 But if you on your part warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he (D)does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have (E)delivered your life.
10 “Now as for you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus you have spoken, saying, “Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we are (F)rotting away in them; (G)how then can we [c]survive?”’ 11 Say to them, ‘(H)As I live!’ declares the Lord [d]God, ‘I take (I)no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked (J)turn from his way and live. (K)Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel?’ 12 And you, son of man, say to [e]your fellow citizens, ‘The (L)righteousness of a righteous man will not deliver him in the day of his transgression, and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he will (M)not stumble because of it in the day when he turns from his wickedness; whereas a righteous man will not be able to live [f]by his righteousness on the day when he commits sin.’ 13 When I say to the righteous he will surely live, and he so trusts in his righteousness that he (N)commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but in that same iniquity of his which he has committed he will die. 14 But when I say to the wicked, ‘You will surely die,’ and he (O)turns from his sin and practices (P)justice and righteousness, 15 if a wicked man restores a pledge, (Q)pays back what he has taken by robbery, walks by the (R)statutes [g]which ensure life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 (S)None of his sins that he has committed will be remembered against him. He has practiced justice and righteousness; he shall surely live.
17 “Yet [h]your fellow citizens say, ‘The way of the Lord is not right,’ when it is their own way that is not right. 18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness and (T)commits iniquity, then he shall die in [i]it. 19 But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and practices justice and righteousness, he will live by them. 20 Yet you say, ‘(U)The way of the Lord is not right.’ O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways.”
19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (A)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever [a]the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20 (B)For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (C)greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (D)gives them life, even so (E)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but (F)He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. (G)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and (H)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and (I)does not come into judgment, but has (J)passed out of death into life.
Two Resurrections
25 Truly, truly, I say to you, (K)an hour is coming and now is, when (L)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (M)hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He (N)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to (O)execute judgment, because He is [b]the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for (P)an hour is coming, in which (Q)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; (R)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
30 “(S)I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and (T)My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but (U)the will of Him who sent Me.
31 “(V)If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not [c]true. 32 There is (W)another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
Witness of John
33 You have sent to John, and he (X)has testified to the truth. 34 But (Y)the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was (Z)the lamp that was burning and was shining and you (AA)were willing to rejoice for [d]a while in his light.
Witness of Works
36 But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (AB)the works which the Father has given Me (AC)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (AD)has sent Me.
Witness of the Father
37 And the Father who sent Me, (AE)He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38 You do not have (AF)His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He (AG)sent.
Witness of the Scripture
39 [e](AH)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is (AI)these that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.
