Ezekiel 33:1-6

Ezekiel as Israel’s Watchman

33 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, speak to your people and tell them: Suppose I bring the sword against a land, and the people of that land select a man from among them, appointing him as their watchman, and he sees the sword coming against the land and blows his trumpet(A) to warn the people. Then, if anyone hears the sound of the trumpet but ignores the warning,(B) and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head. Since he heard the sound of the trumpet but ignored the warning, his blood is on his own hands.[a] If he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. However, if the watchman sees the sword coming but doesn’t blow the trumpet, so that the people aren’t warned, and the sword comes and takes away their lives, then they have been taken away because of their iniquity, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.

Matthew 23:29-36

29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have taken part with them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’[a] 31 You, therefore, testify against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ sins![b](A)

33 “Snakes! Brood of vipers! How can you escape being condemned to hell?[c](B) 34 This is why I am sending you prophets,(C) sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues(D) and hound from town to town. 35 So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you,[d] from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah,(E) son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.(F) 36 I assure you: All these things will come on this generation!(G)
