Psalm 17

In the Shadow of Your Wings

A Prayer of David.

17 Hear a (A)righteous cause, O Yahweh, (B)give heed to my cry of lamentation;
(C)Give ear to my prayer, which is not from (D)deceitful lips.
May (E)my [a]judgment come from Your presence;
May Your eyes behold (F)what is upright.
You have (G)tested my heart;
You have visited me by night;
You have (H)tried me and (I)You find [b]nothing;
I have (J)purposed that my mouth will not [c]transgress.
As for the deeds of men, (K)by the word of Your lips
I have kept from the (L)paths of the violent.
My (M)steps have held fast to Your [d]paths.
My (N)footsteps have not stumbled.

I have (O)called upon You, for You will answer me, O God;
(P)Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.
(Q)Marvelously show Your lovingkindnesses,
O (R)Savior of those who take refuge [e]at Your right hand
From those who rise up against them.
Keep me as [f]the (S)apple of the eye;
Hide me (T)in the shadow of Your wings
From the (U)wicked who devastate me,
My (V)deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They have (W)closed their [g]unfeeling heart,
With their mouth they (X)speak proudly.
11 They have now (Y)surrounded us in our steps;
They set their eyes (Z)to cast us down to the ground.
12 He is (AA)like a lion that is eager to tear,
And as a young lion (AB)lurking in hiding places.

13 (AC)Arise, O Yahweh, confront him, (AD)bring him low;
(AE)Protect my soul from the wicked with (AF)Your sword,
14 From men with (AG)Your hand, O Yahweh,
From men [h]of the world, (AH)whose portion is in this life,
And whose belly You (AI)fill with Your treasure;
They are satisfied with children,
And leave their excess to their infants.
15 As for me, I shall (AJ)behold Your face in righteousness;
(AK)I will be satisfied [i]with Your (AL)likeness when I awake.

2 Samuel 11:2-26

Now when evening came David arose from his bed and walked around on (A)the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance. So David sent and [a]inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is this not (B)Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of (C)Uriah the Hittite?” Then David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and (D)he lay with her; (E)and when she had purified herself from her uncleanness, she returned to her house. And the woman became pregnant; and she sent and told David, and said, “(F)I am pregnant.”

Then David sent to Joab, saying, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, (G)David asked concerning the [b]state of Joab and the [c]state of the people and the [d]state of the war. Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house, and (H)wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and a present from the king went out after him. But Uriah lay down (I)at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. 10 Then they told David, saying, “Uriah did not go down to his house.” And David said to Uriah, “Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?” 11 And Uriah said to David, “(J)The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in [e]booths, and my lord Joab and (K)the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I will not do this thing.” 12 Then David said to Uriah, “(L)Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will send you out.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the [f]next. 13 Now David called him, and he ate and drank before him, and he (M)made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his bed (N)with his lord’s servants, but he did not go down to his house.

14 Now it happened in the morning that David (O)wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 (P)And he had written in the letter, saying, “[g]Place Uriah in the front line of the [h]fiercest battle and withdraw from him, (Q)so that he may be struck down and die.” 16 So it was as Joab kept watch on the city, that he put Uriah at the place where he knew there were valiant men. 17 And the men of the city went out and fought against Joab, and some of the people among David’s servants fell; and (R)Uriah the Hittite also died. 18 Then Joab sent and told David all the events of the war. 19 And he commanded the messenger, saying, “When you have finished telling all the events of the war to the king, 20 and if it happens that the king’s wrath rises and he says to you, ‘Why did you approach the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall? 21 Who (S)struck down Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall so he died at Thebez? Why did you approach the wall?’—then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’”

22 So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him to tell. 23 And the messenger said to David, “The men prevailed against us and came out against us in the field, but we [i]pressed them as far as the entrance of the gate. 24 And the archers shot at your servants from the wall; so some of the king’s servants died, and your servant Uriah the Hittite also died.” 25 Then David said to the messenger, “Thus you shall say to Joab, ‘Do not let this thing be evil in your sight, for the sword devours one as well as another; make your battle against the city stronger and [j]tear it down’; and so strengthen him.”

26 Then the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband had died, so (T)she lamented over her husband.

Revelation 3:1-6

To the Church in Sardis

“And to the angel of the church in (A)Sardis write:

This is what He who has (B)the seven Spirits of God and (C)the seven stars, says: ‘(D)I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, [a]but you are (E)dead. Wake up, and strengthen the things that remain, which were about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of My God. So (F)remember [b]what you have received and heard; and keep it, and (G)repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, (H)I will come (I)like a thief, and you will not know at (J)what hour I will come to you. But you have a few [c](K)names in (L)Sardis who have not (M)defiled their garments, and they will walk with Me (N)in white, for they are worthy. (O)He who overcomes will thus be clothed in (P)white garments, and I will never (Q)erase his name from the book of life, and (R)I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. (S)He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’
