Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 18
Royal Thanksgiving for Victory
To the leader. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:
20 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me.(A)
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord
and have not wickedly departed from my God.(B)
22 For all his ordinances were before me,
and his statutes I did not put away from me.(C)
23 I was blameless before him,
and I kept myself from guilt.
24 Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.(D)
25 With the loyal you show yourself loyal;
with the blameless you show yourself blameless;(E)
26 with the pure you show yourself pure;
and with the crooked you show yourself shrewd.(F)
27 For you deliver a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.(G)
28 It is you who light my lamp;
the Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.(H)
29 By you I can outrun a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.(I)
30 This God—his way is perfect;
the promise of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all who take refuge in him.(J)
28 They are a nation void of sense;
there is no understanding in them.
29 If they were wise, they would understand this;
they would discern what their end would be.(A)
30 How could one have routed a thousand
and two put a myriad to flight,
unless their Rock had sold them,
the Lord had given them up?(B)
31 Indeed, their rock is not like our Rock;
our enemies are fools.[a](C)
32 Their vine comes from the vinestock of Sodom,
from the vineyards of Gomorrah;
their grapes are grapes of poison;
their clusters are bitter;
33 their wine is the poison of serpents,
the cruel venom of asps.(D)
34 Is not this laid up in store with me,
sealed up in my treasuries,(E)
35 for the day of vengeance[b] and recompense,
for the time when their foot shall slip?
Because the day of their calamity is at hand;
their doom comes swiftly.(F)
36 Indeed, the Lord will vindicate his people,
have compassion on his servants,
when he sees that their power is gone,
neither bond nor free remaining.(G)
37 Then he will say, ‘Where are their gods,
the rock in which they took refuge,(H)
38 who ate the fat of their sacrifices
and drank the wine of their libations?
Let them rise up and help you;
let them be your protection!
39 See now that I, even I, am he;
there is no god besides me.
I kill, and I make alive;
I wound, and I heal;
and no one can deliver from my hand.(I)
33 O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!(A)
34 “For who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”(B)
35 “Or who has given a gift to him,
to receive a gift in return?”
36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen.(C)
