Psalm 18

Praise for Deliverance

For the choir director. Of the servant of the Lord, David, who spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.(A) He said:

I love You, Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock,
my fortress, and my deliverer,(B)
my God, my mountain where I seek refuge,
my shield(C) and the horn of my salvation,(D)
my stronghold.
I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,(E)
and I was saved from my enemies.(F)

Psalm 18:20-32

20 The Lord rewarded me
according to my righteousness;(A)
He repaid me
according to the cleanness of my hands.(B)
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord
and have not turned from my God to wickedness.(C)
22 Indeed, I have kept all His ordinances in mind[a]
and have not disregarded His statutes.(D)
23 I was blameless toward Him(E)
and kept myself from sinning.
24 So the Lord repaid me
according to my righteousness,(F)
according to the cleanness of my hands in His sight.(G)

25 With the faithful
You prove Yourself faithful;
with the blameless man
You prove Yourself blameless;
26 with the pure
You prove Yourself pure,
but with the crooked
You prove Yourself shrewd.(H)
27 For You rescue an afflicted people,(I)
but You humble those with haughty eyes.(J)
28 Lord, You light my lamp;
my God illuminates my darkness.(K)
29 With You I can attack a barrier,[b]
and with my God I can leap over a wall.(L)

30 God—His way is perfect;(M)
the word of the Lord is pure.(N)
He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.(O)
31 For who is God besides Yahweh?(P)
And who is a rock? Only our God.(Q)
32 God—He clothes me with strength(R)
and makes my way perfect.

1 Samuel 7:3-13

Samuel told them, “If you(A) are returning to the Lord(B) with all your heart,(C) get rid of the foreign gods(D) and the Ashtoreths that are among you, dedicate yourselves to[a] the Lord, and worship only Him.(E) Then He will rescue you from the hand of the Philistines.” So the Israelites removed the Baals and the Ashtoreths(F) and only worshiped the Lord.

Samuel said, “Gather all Israel at Mizpah,(G) and I will pray to the Lord on your behalf.”(H) When they gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out in the Lord’s presence.(I) They fasted that day,(J) and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.”(K) And Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.

When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their rulers marched up toward Israel. When the Israelites heard about it, they were afraid because of the Philistines. The Israelites said to Samuel, “Don’t stop crying out to the Lord our God for us, so that He will save us from the hand of the Philistines.”

Then Samuel took a young lamb(L) and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on behalf of Israel, and the Lord answered him.(M) 10 Samuel was offering the burnt offering as the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel. The Lord thundered loudly(N) against the Philistines that day and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel.(O) 11 Then the men of Israel charged out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines striking them down all the way to a place below Beth-car.

12 Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it upright(P) between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[b] explaining, “The Lord has helped us to this point.” 13 So the Philistines were subdued(Q) and[c] did not invade Israel’s territory again.(R) The Lord’s hand was against the Philistines all of Samuel’s life.

Romans 2:1-11

God’s Righteous Judgment

Therefore, any one of you[a](A) who judges is without excuse.(B) For when you judge another,(C) you condemn yourself, since you, the judge, do the same things. We know that God’s judgment on those who do such things is based on the truth. Do you really think—anyone of you who judges those who do such things yet do the same—that you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you despise the riches of His kindness,(D) restraint,(E) and patience,(F) not recognizing[b] that God’s kindness(G) is intended to lead you to repentance? But because of your hardness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath(H) for yourself in the day of wrath,(I) when God’s righteous judgment is revealed. He will repay each one according to his works:(J)[c] eternal life(K) to those who by persistence in doing good(L) seek glory, honor,(M) and immortality;(N) but wrath and indignation to those who are self-seeking(O) and disobey the truth(P) but are obeying unrighteousness; affliction and distress(Q) for every human being who does evil, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek;(R) 10 but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does what is good, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. 11 There is no favoritism with God.(S)
