Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
I Will Give Thanks to Your Name
Of David.
138 (A)I will give You thanks with all my heart;
I will sing praises to You before the (B)gods.
2 I will worship (C)toward Your holy temple
And (D)give thanks to Your name for Your lovingkindness and Your [a]truth;
For You have (E)magnified Your [b]word [c]according to all Your name.
3 On the day I (F)called, You answered me;
You made me bold with (G)strength in my soul.
4 (H)All the kings of the earth, O Yahweh, will give You thanks,
When they hear the words of Your mouth.
5 And they will (I)sing of the ways of Yahweh,
For (J)great is the glory of Yahweh.
6 For (K)Yahweh is high,
Yet He (L)sees the lowly,
But the (M)one who exalts himself He knows from afar.
7 Though I (N)walk in the midst of [d]distress, You will [e](O)revive me;
You will (P)stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will (Q)save me.
8 Yahweh will (R)accomplish what concerns me;
O Yahweh, Your (S)lovingkindness endures forever;
(T)Do not fail the (U)works of Your hands.
15 ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “On the day when it went down to Sheol I (A)caused mourning; I covered it with the [a]deep over it and held back its rivers. And its many waters were stopped up, and I made Lebanon [b]mourn for it, and all the trees of the field wilted away on account of it. 16 I made the nations (B)quake at the sound of its downfall when I made it (C)go down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of (D)Lebanon, all the [c]well-watered ones, were (E)comforted in the earth beneath. 17 They also (F)went down with it to Sheol to those who were (G)slain by the sword; and those who were its [d]strength lived (H)under its shade among the nations.
18 “To which among the trees of Eden do you thus liken yourself in glory and greatness? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the earth beneath; you will lie in the midst of the (I)uncircumcised, with those who were slain by the sword. (J)So is Pharaoh and all his multitude!”’ declares Lord Yahweh.”
12 For we do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with [a]some of those who (A)commend themselves, but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding. 13 But we will not boast (B)beyond our measure, but [b](C)within the measure of the area of influence which God apportioned to us as a measure, to reach even as far as you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we did not reach you, (for (D)we were the first to come even as far as you in the (E)gospel of Christ), 15 not boasting (F)beyond our measure in (G)other men’s labors, but having the hope—that as (H)your faith grows—to be (I)enlarged even more by you [c]within our area of influence, 16 so as to (J)proclaim the gospel even to (K)the regions beyond you, and not to boast [d](L)in what has been accomplished in the area of influence of another. 17 But (M)he who boasts is to boast in the Lord. 18 For it is not the one who (N)commends himself that is approved, but the one (O)whom the Lord commends.
