Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Elijah at Horeb
9 Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, (A)the word of Yahweh came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 And he said, “(B)I have been very zealous for Yahweh, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, (C)pulled down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And (D)I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”
11 So He said, “(E)Go forth and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.” And behold, Yahweh was passing by! And (F)a great and strong wind was tearing up the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but Yahweh was not in the earthquake. 12 Then after the earthquake a fire, but Yahweh was not in the fire; and after the fire (G)a sound of a thin [a]gentle whisper. 13 Now it happened that when Elijah heard it, (H)he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, (I)a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 Then he said, “(J)I have been very zealous for Yahweh, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, pulled down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”
15 And Yahweh said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and you will arrive and (K)anoint Hazael king over Aram; 16 and (L)Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and (M)Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17 And it will be that the (N)one who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu (O)shall put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall put to death. 18 (P)Yet I will leave 7,000 in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not (Q)kissed him.”
8 Let me hear what the God, Yahweh, will speak;
For He will (A)speak peace to His people, [a]to His holy ones;
But let them not (B)turn back to [b]folly.
9 Surely (C)His salvation is near to those who [c]fear Him,
That (D)glory may dwell in our land.
10 (E)Lovingkindness and [d]truth have met together;
(F)Righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 [e]Truth (G)springs up from the earth,
And righteousness looks down from heaven.
12 Indeed, (H)Yahweh will give what is good,
And our (I)land will yield its produce.
13 (J)Righteousness will go before Him
And will establish the way of His steps.
Faith Comes by Hearing
5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of law: “(A)The man who does these things shall live by them.” 6 But (B)the righteousness of faith speaks in this way: “(C)Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will go up into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), 7 or ‘Who will go down into the (D)abyss?’ (that is, to (E)bring Christ up from the dead).” 8 But what does it say? “(F)The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9 [a]that (G)if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and (H)believe in your heart that (I)God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, [b]leading to righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, [c]leading to salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “(J)Whoever believes upon Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For (K)there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord is (L)Lord of (M)all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him, 13 for “(N)Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him (O)whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without (P)a preacher? 15 And how will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “(Q)How beautiful are the feet of those who (R)proclaim good news of good things!”
Jesus Walks on the Sea
22 (A)Immediately He [a]made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23 And after He had sent the crowds away, (B)He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. 24 But the boat was already many [b]stadia away from the land, [c]being battered by the waves; for the wind was [d](C)against them. 25 And in (D)the [e]fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 Now when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is (E)a ghost!” And they cried out [f]in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “(F)Take courage, [g]it is I; (G)do not be afraid.”
28 And Peter answered and said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And getting out of the boat, Peter walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, “(H)You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are truly (I)God’s Son!”
