Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
8 I will listen to what God will say;
surely the Lord will declare peace
to His people, His godly ones,
and not let them go back to foolish ways.(A)
9 His salvation is very near those who fear Him,
so that glory may dwell in our land.(B)
10 Faithful love and truth will join together;
righteousness and peace will embrace.(C)
11 Truth will spring up from the earth,
and righteousness will look down from heaven.(D)
12 Also, the Lord will provide what is good,
and our land will yield its crops.(E)
13 Righteousness will go before Him
to prepare the way for His steps.(F)
41 Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a rainstorm.”(A)
42 So Ahab went to eat and drink, but Elijah went up to the summit of Carmel.(B) He bowed down on the ground and put his face between his knees.(C) 43 Then he said to his servant, “Go up and look toward the sea.”
So he went up, looked, and said, “There’s nothing.”
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44 On the seventh(D) time, he reported, “There’s a cloud as small as a man’s hand coming from the sea.”
Then Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Get your chariot ready and go down so the rain doesn’t stop you.’”
45 In a little while, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and there was a downpour. So Ahab got in his chariot and went to Jezreel.(E) 46 The power of the Lord(F) was on Elijah, and he tucked his mantle under his belt(G) and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees
16 The Pharisees and Sadducees approached,(A) and as a test, asked Him to show them a sign from heaven.(B)
2 He answered them: “When evening comes you say, ‘It will be good weather because the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.’ You[a] know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can’t read the signs of the times.[b] 4 An evil and adulterous generation demands a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of[c] Jonah.”(C) Then He left them and went away.
