Psalm 69:7-10

I am being mocked because of you.
    Dishonor overwhelms me.
I am a stranger to my brothers,
a foreigner to my mother’s sons.
Zeal for your house consumes me,
and the mockeries of those who insult you fall on me.
10 I weep and fast,
and I am mocked for it.

Psalm 69:11-15

11 When I dressed in sackcloth,
I became an object of gossip among them.
12 The prominent people mock me,
    composing drinking songs.

Seeking God for Deliverance

13 As for me, Lord, may my prayer to you come at a favorable time.
God, in the abundance of your gracious love,
answer me with your sure deliverance.
14 Rescue me from the mud
and do not let me sink.
Rescue me from those who hate me,
    and from the deep waters.
15 Let neither the floodwaters overwhelm me
nor let the deep swallow me up,
nor the mouth of the well close over me.

Psalm 69:16-18

16 Answer me, Lord, for your gracious love is good;
Turn to me in keeping with your great compassion,
17 and[a] do not ignore your servant,
    because I am in distress.
        Hurry to answer me!
18 Draw near and redeem me;
ransom me because of my enemies.

Jeremiah 18:18-23

Jeremiah Reacts to the Plot against Him

18 Then they said, “Come, let’s make up a plot against Jeremiah. After all, the priest’s instruction, the wise man’s counsel, and the prophet’s message won’t be destroyed.[a] So let’s verbally attack him. Pay no attention to anything he says!”

19 Lord, pay attention to me.
Listen to the voice of my accusers!
20 Should good be repaid with evil?
Yet they have dug a pit to take my life.[b]
Remember! I stood before you
and spoke good on their behalf
in order to turn your wrath away from them.
21 Therefore, make their children undergo famine,
and deliver them over to death in time of war.[c]
May their women be childless widows!
    May their men be slaughtered![d]
May their young men be slain
    by the sword in battle!
22 Let a cry be heard from their houses because you
have brought a raiding party against them suddenly.
For they have dug a pit to capture me
and have set[e] traps for my feet.
23 But you, Lord, know all their plots to kill me.
    Don’t forgive their iniquity,
and don’t erase their sin from your sight.
Let them stumble before you.
When it’s time for you to be angry, act against them!

Acts 5:17-26

The Apostles are Tried before the Jewish Council

17 Then the high priest and all those from the sect of the Sadducees who were with him were filled with jealousy. So they went out, 18 arrested the apostles, and put them in the city jail. 19 But at night the angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and led them out. The angel[a] told them, 20 “Go, stand in the Temple, and keep on telling the people the whole message about this life they can have.”[b]

21 After the apostles[c] heard this, they went into the Temple at daybreak and began to teach. The high priest and those who were with him arrived, called the Council[d] and all the elders of Israel together, and sent word[e] to the prison to have the men brought in. 22 When the Temple police got there, they did not find them in the prison. They came back and reported, 23 “We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 When the commander of the Temple guards and the high priests heard these words, they were utterly at a loss as to what could have happened to them.

25 Then someone came and told them, “Look! The men you put in prison are standing in the Temple and teaching the people!” 26 So the commander of the Temple guards went with his men to bring them back without force, because they were afraid of being stoned to death by the people.
