Psalm 116:1-4

Thanksgiving for Escaping Death

116 I love the Lord because he listens
    to my prayers for help.
He paid attention to me.
So I will call to him for help as long as I live.
The ropes of death bound me.
The fear of death took hold of me.
    I was troubled and sad.
Then I called out the name of the Lord.
I said, “Please, Lord, save me!”

Psalm 116:12-19

12 What can I give the Lord
for all the good things he has given to me?
13 I will give him a drink offering for saving me.
And I will pray to the Lord.
14 In front of all his people,
I will give the Lord what I promised.

15 The death of one that belongs to him
    is precious to the Lord.
16 Lord, I am your servant.
I am your servant and the son of your female servant.
You have freed me from my chains.
17 I will give an offering to show thanks to you.
And I will worship the Lord.
18 In front of all his people,
I will give the Lord what I promised.
19 I will do this in the Temple courtyards
    in Jerusalem.

Praise the Lord!

Isaiah 25:6-9

God’s Banquet for His Servants

The Lord of heaven’s armies will give a feast.
It will be on this mountain for all people.
It will be a feast with the best food and wine.
The meat and wine will be the finest.
On this mountain God will destroy
the veil that covers all nations.
This veil, called “death,” covers all peoples.
But God will destroy death forever.
The Lord God will wipe away every tear from every face.
God will take away the shame
of his people from the earth.
The Lord has spoken.

At that time people will say,
    “Our God is doing this!
We have trusted in him, and he has come to save us.
We have been trusting our Lord.
So we will rejoice and be happy when he saves us.”

Luke 14:12-14

You Will Be Rewarded

12 Then Jesus said to the man who had invited him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite only your friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors. At another time they will invite you to eat with them. Then you will have your reward. 13 Instead, when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind. 14 Then you will be blessed, because they cannot pay you back. They have nothing. But you will be rewarded when the good people rise from death.”
