Psalm 116:1-4

Thanksgiving for Escaping Death

116 I love the Lord because he listens
    to my prayers for help.
²He paid attention to me.
    So I will call to him for help as long as I live.
³The ropes of death bound me.
    The fear of death took hold of me.
    I was troubled and sad.
⁴Then I called out the name of the Lord.
    I said, “Please, Lord, save me!”

Psalm 116:12-19

¹²What can I give the Lord
    for all the good things he has given to me?
¹³I will give him a drink offering for saving me.
    And I will pray to the Lord.
¹⁴In front of all his people,
    I will give the Lord what I promised.

¹⁵The death of one that belongs to him
    is precious to the Lord.
¹⁶Lord, I am your servant.
    I am your servant and the son of your female servant.
    You have freed me from my chains.
¹⁷I will give an offering to show thanks to you.
    And I will worship the Lord.
¹⁸In front of all his people,
    I will give the Lord what I promised.
¹⁹I will do this in the Temple courtyards
    in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 26:1-4

A Song of Praise to God

26 At that time people will sing this song in Judah:

We have a strong city.
    God protects us with its strong walls and defenses.
²Open the gates,
    and the good people will enter.
    They follow God’s good way of living.
³You, Lord, give true peace.
    You give peace to those who depend on you.
    You give peace to those who trust you.
⁴So, trust the Lord always.
    Trust the Lord because he is our Rock forever.

1 Peter 1:13-16

A Call to Holy Living

¹³So prepare your minds for service and have self-control. All your hope should be for the gift of grace that will be yours when Jesus Christ comes again. ¹⁴In the past you did not understand, so you did the evil things you wanted. But now you are children of God who obey. So do not live as you lived in the past. ¹⁵But be holy in all that you do, just as God is holy. God is the One who called you. ¹⁶It is written in the Scriptures: “You must be holy, because I am holy.”^[a]
